    K&N filter's.......???

Just wondering if anyone else is using them,i've had one in my cruiser for about 12 month's or so now and cleaned it again for about the forth time today.I also stuck one in the missus Rav4 and put one in my XR650 so i hope they are worth the money you pay for them.Has any one used them long term say 5/6 year's to see how they stand up over time? Cheer's Dan..............

Yeah they are worth it. The oil element ones anyway, I had 1 on every 4x4 ive ever had. Its a good back up to the snokel incase you go just a little too deep. Just make sure you use the right cleaning kits for them. If you do use the wrong oil it can bugger it all up. But if its the paper ones im not sure how many cleans you can do to them!!

Yep Bens right, need to use the right cleaning method or they fall to bits takes a good number of years, but it will happen.

Replaced mine with a paper precleaner filter and they really choke the air flow to the motor!

Just put a Fina type of foam unit back on and I reckon I picked up a 1/3 to 1/2 gear on each one. good stuff.

Have one on me Lux and have done for the last 4 years. They are the best flowing filter on the market IMO but they will not clean the air as well as a paper element. But this does not matter as they do the job to a top standard and that is good enough for any engine, with no noticable diference in engine wear over time compared with ome.
Just a tip keep em clean as they choke quicker than a paper one. I have made a screw attachment to attach the K&N to me batt drill so I can spin dry it. I also keep a spare paper element incase I don't have the time to clean or dry the K&N and I fit it for a few days till I get around to the job.

Putting it on the drill sound's like a good idea but you would have to hang on tight not to get the speed wobble's!Guess i'm lucky living in northern Australia i just put mine on the whellie bin for half an hour in the sun and it's dry.Thank's Dan............

Ive run one for 2 years now but if i go on a real dusty run with a heap of cars in a line it wont stop the dust,so i put on a standard filter in this sort of situation, there was a big discussion on these on outer limits and someone said next time you service the car have a look in your induction line after the filter and see if ant dust was getting through,i did this and mine was dirty as,when i run the paper filter this doesnt happen.

Funny you say that mate as i keep an eye on the inside of the element and the induction tube and so far it has been clean but what you say is the best way of checking on what's getting through.I think that they really are a element for the drag strip or similar and would proberbly clog up in really dusty condition's.So there proberbly not all that their hyped up to be really.Dan.........

Re the filtering quality of the foam filter, I'm only using this in the pre cleaner and the main engine filter is still the paper oval thingo.

So am I wrong to think that even if a little dust gets thru (which it hastn't) wouldn't the main filter take care of it anyway?

Well you would hope 2 filter's is better than one.Just check the inside of the second element and where it sit's and that should be clean if not there's a problem.Dan.........

    Re: K&N filter's.......???

I had a finer filter disintegrate and the foam bent the impellor to the turbo as it went through. Caused lots of expense big mess in the intercooler as well. So it wasn't worth the cost in my situation. It was several years old and had done around 80000k and was serviced every 5000 and oiled as per instructions. You just don't know when the integrity will fail. I went back to genuine paper and they are doing ok.

Dan, i have one on my GU 4 years now, they not bad but dont use them in heavy dust conditions, they wont keep the dust out 100% when i go bush i always put the paper filter back in
but for every day use on the black stuff tis good

Sorry to paddle against the flow here fella's, but it's becuse I care.........

One of my main criteria for buying my last car was that it must show no evidence that an aftermarket air filter has ever been fitted as I was looking at a vehicles around 200k km on the clock but didn't want one with the compression of a 500k old engine. silica is a big engine contaminate and is hard enough to keep out of the engine for longevity with quality filters. I would consider a K&N only if I lived in alpine regions and during winter only.

Here is a link that puts some of this reasoning into perspective, use the K&N but know what you are using IMO, each to their own.

    Hi FNQ

You have a GQ TD42 I believe? Turbo or not?

Do you still run the oval paper filter on top of the motor and the circular pre cleaner paper filter?
