    yellow fin tuna

a mate and i are planning on targeting yellowfin tuna over the next few months for the first time. can someone give us a few tips?

we are fishing out of ballina and have the capabalility to fish the shelf all day long. what we want to know is what sort of conditions should we be looking out for; depth, ime of year, lures, currents, water temp or cubing etc

any help will be much appreciated.

I know of a local long liner that works in close in the 60 km range useally this time of year out from cape byron he usally gets rat yellows averaging 20kg to 30kg but gets the odd 60kg fish, he useally looks for birds working and just drifts the area using live yakkas and slimeys, he said that theres sometimes some big recreational boats towing lures around, mind you i'm sure if you did some cubing on big drifts around some birds burlied and had some livies out in that general area you should come up trumps in the next few months, before the juvinial fish invade the close reefs come october, november.

We gave it a go yesterday. Had no luck but had fun. The water was a warm 20 degrees which is amazing for this time of year and the conditions were perfect. we had a gentleman’s start and returned at 5.30pm. so we spent some quality time trying different things out but to no avail.

Will take your advice on board.
