    Merc 140hp v6

    Hi Guys.
As previously mentioned on these pages, I am installing a motor on my boat.
    It is a 2002 140 carbed v6.

So far so good. gear and throttle shift cables are in and adjusted correctly.

Basically, all is going to plan, except that i need a bit of help with the wiring colour allocations in 2 areas.

    a) the guages; tacho, and trim n' tilt guage,

    b) wiring loom on engine. I have a few wires coming out beside the plug, and one that i seem to have no place for??? It is a brown w/ white stripe.

If any body is able to check this on their motor or by any other means, it would be appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Damo

Try iboats.com ..Join up and enter the boat forums under Merc. The Yanks know a lot about Mercs and have been very helpful to me over the years.

    Cheers guys, i'll keep trolling.
I am unable to access iboats through my isp (optus). There is a reason they have blocked it, but can't remember. bughger eh.

    alright, think i've got it!!!!

brn/wht wire joins to another brn/wht that was hiding underneath trimn'tilt relay.

now, if memory serves me correctly, for the guages, purple and black are 12v+ and 12v- respectively, with the grey being my tacho pulse signal, and the black/white being the trimn'tilt guage signal. sounds good??? i hope so.

That only leaves me with one more wire at the guages which is a tan/blue wire, and i have a feeling this has something to do with the warning system.
Does anyone know if these have a warning horn built into the control box or are they separate????

Warning horn is inside the contol box. Colour is correct.

Thanks again for the input lads. Manchild, thanx for the link - one of the better sites i have seen. BM, you have put my mind at ease.

I am currently looking to get my hands on a workshop manual (not seloc (spelling?) so i can check a few things, first one being the idle speed. It is running about 1000rpm on muffs (yes, got it running this arvo) which causes a fair old grinding noise when shifting into gear. Now, i know it will run lower in the water with a bit of backpressure, but how much lower?? If it needs lowering further, the only adjustment left is on the timing advance lever. Is this correct???
Sorry if these seem like stupid q's, hopefully i can get my hands on a manual in the next few days.

    Adjust the IDLE STOP.........

    Touch nothing else...

Or I, I , I..... do unspeakable things to you........

Yeah, i get that a lot. The missus has been promising to do unspeakable things to me since i started working on this motor . Still waiting.

But yeah, sorry BM, idle stop is already adjusted to the point where it just loses contact with the throttle cam, that's why i asked. Is this the limit of idle adjustment?? or is it carb adjustment from there? If so, outta my league - i won't touch it. I'm gonna take it for a water test today, so will check it all again then.

5 thou gap on the throttle cam to roller. Carbs all shut at idle. 1000rpm on muffs should be fine. Just check it in the drink. Around 700 rpm is what you want.

    cheers
