    Squid for Jewies

    Greetings all from Ballina.

Can anyone tell me how to rig a 15-20 cm long fresh squid for jewie bait?
At present I have put together a 70 cm, 70 lb mono leader with a 6/0 long shank Aberdeen at the end. A 4/0 short shank is snelled about 12 cm above it.

I was thinking of looping the 6/0 through the top of the hood to fix the squid in place and then put it inside the hood and then hook it shallow between the eyes. The hook would be pulled inside the hood. The 4/0 was going to be passed once through the top of the hood but would be pretty much exposed. The bend and point of the 6/0 would come out from between the eyes with the rest hidden.

Many thanks for any help or info., Rob.

    Hi Rob.
This is my methodology when surf fishing at night for jew.
50cm trace 100lb mono, swivel one end, business end, 10/0 gama suicide 125mm - 150mm below a 3/0 gama suicude, both snooded.
Re baiting up, take a piece of thin wire 300mm long, form a small reverse hook in one end.
Poke the wire completely through the squid end to end(remove the quill first) so the hook end is below the head of the squid.
Thread the swivel from the trace onto the 'hook' and pull the wire up through the squid, drawing the trace through until the large hook can be fixed through the eyes. The small keeper hook should be hooked through the tough bit at the aft end of the squid, I like a little slack between the hooks, so that the keeper hook takes the weight of the bait.
Now clip the trace and bait to your main line using a suitable clip.
I use a large sinker on 50cm of 100lb, swivel to main line (8-10kg), sinker, swivel to clip.
    Hope you can visaulise this!
Others use large gang hooks to good effect, but I prefer this method for whole squid when chasing jew.
If you are getting hit by tailor (very common, they also love squid), change to gangs and you will find the tailor much easier to hook.
There are some gun jewfishers up your way, hopefully they will reply and give you some more options.
    Cheers!

The post was for all members, not just those from Ballina.
    Sorry for any misunderstanding.
