CAN ANYONE TELL ME IF A 84 HILUX 4X4 GEARBOX WILL FIT 89 HILUX RN105 22R ENGINE . NOT SHAW WHAT TYPE OF ENGINE THE GEARBOX WAS PULLED OUT FROM BEHIND DIESEL OR PETROL ENGINE, I HAVE BEEN TOLD THE BELLHOUSING CAN BE CHANGED ? in need of some help fellers. or maybe someone has one for sale. thanks dave.
Crosso, mate Toyota's are great with interchangability. With the 1984 gearbox regardless if it was off a petrol or diesel the gearbox is the same as your 1989 however the bell housing is different. I am guessing you have a 1989 with a stuffed box so you will already have the right bell housing on your truck. Leave the bell housing, clutch assemble etc intact on your truck and bolted to your 22R engine. Unbolt your box and transfer and the 1984 box will go straight in.
Yeah Dave, the Hilux 5 speed gearbox is called an L52 and is used both in the diesel and the petrol ones right up into the late nineties. The transfer box changed internally in late nineties to chain driven with a lower ratio but it was externally the same. The gearbox ratios remained the same right through, Toyota accounts for the difference between diesel and petrol engines via the final drive ratio in the diff, 4.3 diff ratio in the diesel and 4.7 diff ratio in the petrol.
