    Flying Fish point (Innisfail).........advise

    Hi all,

Planning 2 nights in the caravan park at Flying fish point (innisfail). Will definately be hiring a tinnie and exploring the Johnstone. Any tips or advise will be appreciated. Mostly a bait fisherman so wanting to know if a cast net is required or will bait jigs do. Any particular spots that I should try out abd any spots that I should not becuase of floating handbags.

Because the tinny is only 6hp small job I assume that trolling for mackeral would be out of the question. Please tell me if that is not nessesarily the case.

    Thanks in advance

Stop in and see Sam Pagano at his tackle shop in the middle of town, near coles. He will give you all the good info on spots and gear and whats been happening and some zoning maps as I think they have made some of the close areas out from the mouth of the Johnstone green zones now. Cheers Ben

my brother just got back from 4 months at innisfail and got onto many fish land and boat based. He said he had the most fun walking up the beach, stalking and casting into the small creeks that rundown with small SP's, and hardbodys. The most productive lures for him where surface poppers. Landed quite a few barra this way.
When he first got to the caravan park afew blokes where live baiting off the shore and whilst he was there they pulled in a good size barra. Goes to show you dont have to go too far to get onto some!
    Have fun!

k/K, the point itself is great fishing, your staying at the van park At FFP, heading back into town you have the FFP shop on your righthand side, keep going another 300m and you will see another road on your left, i forget the name of that street, follow that down, its a deadend area, there is a bit of a beach and boat ramp, head towards the point itself, you should do ok in this area from large bream, jacks, and cast a few spinners for doggie macs and if ya lucky even a spanish mac, queeines and trevs, if your fishing the beach near the park ( only walking distance ) i never had luck with good fish, only rays N sharks
all the best and enjoy Innisfail

We spend 3 weeks every September at Flying Fish Point caravan park and love it. There are plenty of fish to be had in the Johnstone river (launch at "The Coconuts" ramp). Also plenty of mackeral to be had just out the front - grab some big garfish and troll them around (spot called Meaburn rock is a hot spot). There are patches of reef around close in as well - just have a look at a chart of the area and you'll see. Also you can go down the road to Mourilyan harbour and get a feed of mudcrabs and have a fish.

P.S. Try not to tell too many people how good it is - it is one of the best kept spots around.

Thanks guys. I will be there first weekend in September. Hopefully macs are around. Trolling a gar around sounds good to me. I will only be hiring the tinny from the park so not too sure on how far we can travel and where we can travel, however your advise will come ion very handy. I need a break from work and getting into some decent fish is what the doctor ordered. I am starting to think tha 2 nights stay is just not long enough so I have added another day just because you guys say the fishing is good. Too be honest I have read somewhere else on AUSFISH a thread by CAM and that sounded good to me so i decided on FFP as aposed to Mission Beach for a bit of R&R

    Thanks

One more Question CAM.............does the caravan park have a place/freezer where one can keep fish assuming that we do????????????

There is a freezer (old style shop ice cream one) in his shed that is for everybodys use. Only thing is that it can get full with scraps and bait so can be a little short on room at times. Although last time I was up there and wanted to bring some fish home it wasn't freezing them through properly so Andre let me use his personal one (sure he wouldn't mind if you find the same thing).

Tinnies should be fine for trolling out the front - you really don't have to be far offshore to get into the mackeral. Gar trolled on some wire or laser pro's would be the go.

Good luck and let us know how you go.

Don't forget to go to the other tackle shop on the river front. Rex will direct you to some good spots. If you launch at the coconuts ramp and look up stream you will see a rock with a nav light on top (crocodile rock) fishing around here can produce at different times of the tide. If sitting there look further upstream around the bend and you will see a house on the left bank with a little jetty hanging off the high bank, out the front of this is a big hole known localy as the jack hole. It is about 14-15 metres deep and never fails to produce a good jack or three. I usually go out to the reef so haven't fished the river for a while. Ninds creek is worth a look too, which is just further up on the left side, carefull going in it is really shallow in the mouth. The whole damn river needs a good dredge.

Thanks again guys. Can I buy garfish for trolling nearby or do I need to jig for live bait and try that. I am not too good at rigging my own wolfie or gar and hopefully the local tackle shop can give me some pointers. Glad to hear that trolling for macks can be done close by as I do not really have sea legs and have a tendancy to scatter burley around if conditions are not glassy. I assume cast netting will not be a problem either.

Hi Kev, I live at the point.... for macks... meaburn rock, {pinnacle} is about a 20 minute run to the sth of the river at FFP in my 4 mtr 25 hp rig, you'd be an hour run with ya 6 hp. Is open water and can blow up.
Launch at mourilyan harbour and the pinnacle is only a 10 minute run in my boat.
If you want good macks, bring bigger boat lol and go to the islands, 20 minute run from the harbour in my boat, 3/4 hour run from FFP.

Better for you to go out to the twins...rocks out the front of FFP and only 5 minute run. Smaller macks...but fun on light gear. You'll get lots of hits but not many hookups trolling gar, they just nip the tail off lol even using a spring rigger with one hook in and one hook out rig.
Drag a spoon round and you'll get them or pilchards under a float.
You could try the sisters, {rocks further nth} but about a 20 minute run in my boat, better fishing, but 6hp hmmmmm if it blows up, all depends what ya used to.

Near the twins is a bouy... marks the outlet of a pipe that runs into the prawn farm, you'll get mack's there as well.

Bring ya cast net...live sards are the go

have fun but go easy on my fish stocks

    mack fishing...best to worst are

    barnard islands
    pinaccle
    sisters
    twins
    pipe bouy

You can get gar from the tackle shops - the bigger the better, but if you can see if you can catch some yourself in your local esturies and take with you (good time of year now) as a lot of the ones you buy from the shops have been netted and can be a little bit mutilated around the gills. If you're not confident in making your own swimming rigs buy a rig called the "Headstart" trolling rigs. They are quick and easy to use and work well - you can set the hook as far back in the bait as you need to as well. Having said that no reason lures won't work effectively just that I've always found a big gar will outfish a lure if the fish are bit shy.

Well Nth Qld..............now you have me thinking. I am a bit concerned with the 6hp tinnie and just where I can fish with it. As I will be going early September I assume that the August winds will still prevail, thus making it difficult to go anywhere within reason for a SHOT AT THE MACS. BUGGER!!!!!

If the winds are up I will have to resort to the Johnstone.............

Thanks CAM.............I like the look of the "headstart"..........I will certainly get one of those for the trip.

    Cheers
I have never hooked a mac and hoping that FFP can break the drought.
