hi all,
i know this has been brought up in the past but im wondering what the current situation is with mercury and Yamaha’s relationship.
I’m getting the latest 60hp efi 4st merc next month and am wondering if there’s any difference between the latest yammy.
I’ve spoken to 2 dealers and one said the latest merc uses the yammy power head ( what is classed as the power head? ) i was given the impression from the first dealer that the "motor" was really a Yamaha but the efi and drive line were mercury.
the other guy said they had a strong partner ship until recently when the split and new are either mercury only built or Yamaha only built with no common parts.
the spec's seem very similar to me only the merc has a 20A rectifier and the yammy a 17A.
im just wondering if there would be any reason to buy one over the other if the price was the same.
Also ive been looking at both manufactures websites and im very disappointed with mercury’s. Yamaha seems to have gone to allot more effort and has fuel usage data which i found very interesting. merc's website is also advertising its copyright 06 a bit slack i feel, i hope the rest of the company has a bit more enthusiasm than its marketing team
Mate i just bought the yammie 4strk 60 and looked at the merc are you going tiller or foward control's?If going tiller have a look at the yammie set up it's heap's better than merc's.I think they share the same block still but that's about it so i was told they did share powerhead's in the past but not any more.(the powerhead was complete engine assembly excluding wiring)or so the dealer here tell's me.Dan..
they change very often but the lattest P/H is by Merc
they have also changed the piston and rods and went with ART ( forged pistons)
Merc now has over 68* of share hold on TMC (tohatsu motor corporation)
cylinder block on 75hp and to 115hp is Yammy, but also Merc assembles and ships yamaha short blocks to Japan
the list just goes on N on, just like suzi N jonno... same motor
