Not good to hear Dave! Thanks for that info! It does get bloooody cold out that way... stressed water levels out there wouldnt help at all.
How about Lenthalls? Anyone in the 'know'?
Theo.

Don't know about stressed water levels, I know the dam is down to about 19% but that still leaves a few areas with 13M+ of water and most of the main basin with more than 8M so i would have thought that should be heaps. At 19% there is still a hell of a lot of water in the dam. Didn't see a single Yellowbelly, but I doubt the cold would worry them too much.
Dave.
Im done with this, Ive said what I came to say.
I should have listened to the blokes who " have been there done that " and not bothered with this. I fully understand why these guys just dont participate in this kind of thing.
If anyone wants to take the constructive & far more positive option then join a stocking group and do something that REALLY benefits the future of recreational fishing. After all does paying for a SIP each year really cut the mustard in the long term.
Cheers
James
Fair enough, we can do without the BS anyway. It's a shame though, all we wanted was information, not an argument. And you might find that a few of those involved in this thread ARE members of stocking groups, I was an active member of one before I moved up here. Yes, I have been slack and not joined up with the local one here but the missus and I needed a break for a bit, the last one was pretty full on.
James,
Some people are just tossers...fact! Keep stocking them. 60 odd Barra in Lenthalls and from what I hear there could be thousands of Bass in Somerset. Not much we as members of Stocking Groups can do. I'm sure all the experts here will be able to fix it for us and stop the stocking completely. Maybe it was an Indian Doctor that caused the problem!
I notice the posters of negativity are not involved in the day to day stocking, but then again those who are involved in stocking are a definate minority. I'm with you mate, we'll just sit back and wait for the experts to fix it completely.
As i said before fellas they will buy more stock when they drought breaks, and when the flood water dissapear, and what makes this scenario any different? here here to the stocking groups. Keep up the good work
With regards to these recent fish deaths in several dams does anybody have an explanation as to why some barra perish and so far most others survive?
Is it just the sick or the weak?
Only the ones that spend to much time in the coldest part of the waterway?
Is there any genetic variation in barra which could make some more cold tolerant than others?
cheers
Scott

Im sure you can conjur up something better then that old mate... keep at it, though.
By no means is anyone trying to be an expert here Dale... but Im sure things can be done to prevent these kills. Am I right?

I didn't think anyone was trying to be an expert either. I thought this thread was put up to get a bit of a debate going on the subject. I also thought a debate would be a group of people interested in a common subject, exchanging facts and throwing a few ideas/thoughts around, but some don't want to play the game, so I must be mistaken. If the fish kill in Lenthalls did only amount to 0.4% then perhaps it is nothing to really worry about and nothing needs to be done. But why should we be expected to take someones word for it? Why not share with us the methods used to get to this figure so we too can have an informed opinion. Or are you just trying to protect the image of the dam by stating such low figures, figures that have no real basis? Not a mate of Johnny Howards are you? Smoke and mirrors and all that.
Anyway, anyone who has been out to any of these dams, tell us what you have seen, we might be able to get an idea of how bad the situation is and throw a few ideas around that may help. A bit of debate is allways good, just don't be so arrogant about it.
Dave.
Also just curious why the clearing of trees was needed to improve the water quality? Can you explain this a bit more please. My thoughts have always been that clearing would lead to more soil runoff/erosion of banks etc. Probably a simple reason behind the clearing though.
Thanks.
Dave.
Just back from the dam again, took a few pics today, hope you're not on dialup

Its not for me to get into scientific garb, leave that up to those that get paid the BIG $$$.
But clearing the trees I believe, was done; as when the place fills there would have been a hell of a lot of wet and rotting vegetation, all this turns the water off. After all Lenthalls is FIRST and FOREMOST a water supply for teh City here, we are just LUCKY that they allow us to stock it with fish.
Everyone is well within their right to have their say in this post or any other , BUT Lenthalls in particular seems to be getting singled out for a lot of bad publicity, by some who have their own personal bugs to bare over whatever is. has, was happening at teh dam.
In short , get over it guys. Lenthalls IS and WILL continue to be a GREAT JOINT FISHERY.
As lone as FCFSA is alive and kicking , forget about a BAss only dam and learn to live with Barra and the natural occurences that Mother Natuire throws at ALL of us form time to time, not even 'LEGENDS', can alter that.
As I keep saying if ya dont like what's happening at Lenthalls then go fish somewhare else and whinge about their regulations, fish stocking, fish kills etc etc
To EVERYONE who has posted support to ALL teh stocking groups in this post- a huge thank you , on behalf of everyone involved in a group, you are the guys who make all the work worth it.
NOW- can we please move on.
Pete
Yep move on not a problem Intend to do that with the next step.. >>>>.....
Thanks oscar64, I didn't think about preparation for the increase of the dam wall. New there had to be a simple explanation.
Thanks.
Dave.
Hi Folks, The fish kills are getting more wide spread by the day.
Got this back from a mate in dpi yesterday. I guess he wont mind me putting some if it up here for general public info.
Can add dead fish at Awoonga, Samsonvale & Kurwongbah.Garry,
Its pretty widespread this week. My list includes Lake Julius, Lake
Moondarra, Theresa Ck Dam, Fairburn, Burnett River, Lake Manchester,
Somerset, Wivenhoe, Forest Lake, Chinaman Ck Dam, East Leichardt Dam,
several creeks around Mackay and Rockhampton, Teemburra,
Callide....probably forgotten a few. I will try to collate all the info
coming in on temps, numbers of fish etc over the next few weeks and
write a summary for you. Most of the temps have been 10-14 degrees.
Some good news with major tilapia die offs, but they always come back. I
checked out a report from the top of BP today while I was driving home
from Mt Perry, but the birds must have already cleaned up. Only a few
bonys in that one. I feel really sorry for the Mt Isa crew and Callide,
Clermont 500+ barra and counting up there
Possibly more but with this weather, how many folks are actually out on the water???
Yep, it is a shame, but we just get back on the horse & keep riding.
Cheers all,
Fitzy..
