You can't, and the only way you could take a fish of that size would be in a dam, records must be put on certified scales and as far as i know you must be in some type of fishing club to claim records or your fish doesn't even get considered.

Is there a reason why you would ask this? Do you expect to catch a 130cm barra that goes 47kg? If not, why ask? Enlighten me please.

I have heard there are a few salmon around but not as many as one would expect this time of year !
Have you got a mark for that 130cm Barra?

another thing to remember also is that the gear you caught it on will also come into play, you may have (say) got it on a heavy cord line and as such it will not be a record claim, as well as the "official" weighing methods.

Samson is on the money here. You have to be in a club - ANSA or IGFA - to be able to claim a record. Then there are either line class or all tackle records. Fish have to be weighed (dead) on certified scales to get the weight exact and also several measurements taken.

A good fish is a good fish. For me, records are only a guide as to how big they actually get, not anything truly worth chasing. I'm sure there's plenty of game and club fishos who see it differently but when I'm fishing the only other competitor is the fish....and maybe the other blokes on the boat lol!

Read up on it first, if you use trebles it's no record, if someone else gaffs the fish, its no record....the list goes on.

    Sean,

those are both incorrect for ANSA records. Treble hooks are permitted for ANSA. Not certain about IGFA rules, but I am pretty sure trebles are OK.

Other people are allowed to gaff a fish and take the trace for both ANSA and IGFA. Other people are not allowed to touch the rod or reel during the fight. Maybe that is what you were thinking of?

Also fish can be weighed alive so it would be possible and especially so from out of one of the freshwater impoundments so anything over 120cm would not matter. If you have the intention to go after a big Barra you would have to have your certified scales set up on the bank and maybe use a sling to weigh it to look after the fish if you intended releasing it. IGFA records are weighed live all the time in slings on land on certified scals if you have a read through the quarterly IGFA mag. The technicality will come in if it is 120cm plus saltwater Barra. The intent of the DPI rules say it should be released immediately yet if you weighed it for a record you would be getting yourself into hot water as part of the record process is taking photos so you would have photographic evidence of you doing something that is illegal.

    Re: illiagal record

i think i would risk going to jail to get a picture holding and weighing a 130cm 47kg barra prior to releasing it.

the likelyhood of me ever catching this fish means i have nothing to worry about

    Re: illiagal record

wheeler dog i would happy if i cought a 100cm barra that reached the 30kg mark and im with u joel i guess i cant say i wouldent care cuz i know if i lanedd a barra or a non take species that big first thingh pop into my mind would be "record" but no going to happen to soon lol

I am sure I read somewhere that trebles aren't allowed. Also that you must complete the capture yourself. Can anyone find this out for me. Sean
