New Zorst for the Lux

I know it is spelt E X H A U S T , but I was looking on one of those rev head sites and that is how all the 18 year olds seem to be spellling it.

Anyway back to the point, I am looking at replacing the exhaust system on my diesel hilux, probably extractors and 2.5 inch largely straight through system if I can get away with it. The old muffler is a bit sick so I will need to do something.
I was thinking of re-routing the pipe to come out the side and then up in front of the tray with like a chrome heat shield around it, bit like a prime mover exhaust if you know what I mean.
This would free up a lot of room under the tray for an auxillary tank and a second battery. I have seen one other Hilux getting around with a similar setup, but was wondering what the legalities of this would be and also if anyone has done similar and maybe recommendations of exhaust shops that could do this for me.

One problem with routing your exhaust up the back of your cabin is everything you place in the tray will get covered in soot esp if you load up on a run going away camping or if you labour your motor driving beaches or whatever. The soot gets everywhere and even if you cant see it on the load you handle it and you will have black hands.
The other problem with those exhausts is they are placing the noisy end of ur car right behind your head.
I bought a 4by with exhausts that way several yrs ago and it took me about a month to get enuff dosh to get them put back under the car. It gave me huge headaches with the constant noise and vibrations behind my melon on long runs of 4 hours or more.

Its up to you but i would not recommend making that conversion.

yeah tuna, leave it out the back mate. And what hilux model is it? your better off if your looking for power to go to someone who tunes deisel exhausts and they will already know what way to go to get the most power. Depending on if its turbo deisel/ naturally asperated etc... 1 single 3 inch mandrel or split it and run 2 smaller ones. I dont know im not really a deisel guy, but they know just what to do. Then get a D- Tronic chip for it . Also exhaust fumes cause rust aswell under your tray. Not to mention the deisel puffs of goodness.

Would definately keep it under the tray. Tell whoever is doing it what your plans are for the ute and they should be able to design your ZORST to suit.

Its 2000 model xtra cab trayback ute, 3 ltr, no tubo and no chip either thank god.
I think diesels run best if you just get rid of the exhaust as quickly as possible, ie. no back pressure, but I wasn't really looking for more power, just more usable space under the tray, any power increase would just be a bonus.
My brother has six wheel landcruiser ute and he just stuck it out the side behind the passenger door , then installed a long range tank and then put 3 truck batterys under there for power for his fridge, freezer, lights etc.

SeaHunt, I have a custom twin sytem in my '06 dual cab hilux. I had to relocate the spare wheel because it no longer fits. The wheels are bigger than standard anyway so that was not an issue for me.

In a 200 Xtra cab tray back you have more than enough room to put everything your mate has as well as a water tank. All you need to do is plan what you want there. I personally have owned a 92 single cab 2.8d, 03 dual cab V6, and now this one. I have also owned (the business) numerous other model single cabs and currently also have a 93 single cab 2.8d, so I know where I am coming from.

Ben and I have dissaggreed over exhaust size previously, but that is just a matter of different opinions. From what he has said and what I have seen I don't think that either of us is wrong, just different. whether you go 2.5" or 3" you are going to get better flow, hence better performance and economy. (Only if you don't use the extra performance too much!!)

As I said just plan what you want, measure it up and go for it. I'm just nutting out a removable mount for a laptop and video camera for my 'lux. The laptop for work/play and the camera for both.

I agree with the previous posts, I have a dual cab 2.8D with extractors and 2.5inch straight thru and it is loud. fine for me driving with window down but when passenger sides are down it is very annoying, especially under load. So i believe it would be even worse for u behind the cab, however I did notice it makes the engine rev alot better, so does help performance somewhat. One good or bad point that comes with the noise....ppl know your coming!

i wouldnt think that there would be too much back pressure if its non turbo. If your going to leave it like that then i would get extractors for it. Makes a big difference to power and for the same feul economy. But instead of fitting the second tank. You can replace your normal tank with a LONGRANGER tank like my dad did cost him $1200 fitted, 115 litres. They also have a 125 litre 1 for a single cab. Im not sure which 1 would be for a extra cab though. And its made to fit the spot perfectly with lots of rrom for exhaust. As it replaces where the old tank was.
