    wet box for tranduser

hi all.i am just about to order a furuno fcv585 from the states and this is what i would like to do.i am thinking about putting an oil filled box under the port bunk close to the keel line and away from the any shaft and prop turbulance.my idea is to set a shoot through hull transduser in the box about 25mm from the hull so it would be level and then fill box with clean engine or cooking oil to the top of box and secure.can any of you see problems with this setting.cos at this moment i am getting to much disturbance from transduser near engine bay.that was set up badly.thanks for any advise you can give.gary..mooloolaba.

Arvor will work perfectly have had the same set up for seven years without a problem.

Gary, instead of making a box there are wet box transducers setups available for the furuno. There fully adjustable to fit any hull at any angle. Its simply a case of fitting the base filling it with glycol and the transducer attaches to the top. Ive got one under the drivers seat in my boat, has no interference from the motors and reads well at full speed ...foxy

Hi Arvor, I also have the same setup in my SF20 with the FCV620. When I ordered the sounder I got the wetbox ducer instead of the transom mount. Fixed it to the hull with Sikaflex, filled it with distilled water and works perfectly.
Get bottom readings at all speeds, even at WOT which is over 80km/h.

    Cheers,

Foxy, do you think your ducer ever has air between the hull and the water having it so far forward in the boat?? I have also been told of people having very good results from having their ducers a long way forward of the engines... seems to be that engine interference is way more of a problem than bubles

    your thought?

Garry, ive been in a number of boats with wet box setup's and most have been well forward. I agree with you that having it well forward would seem an issue with air. I was concerned with my current boat that it may have been to far forward but it works brilliantly. Travelling in choppy seas at over 30mph and into the wind and sea it will start to lose readings in deep water (over 60 meters), its not bad, its still reading the bottom contours but may miss fish life. Angle the boat to the sea, side on or with, and its a perfect reading. Calm conditions it reads all the time even at 40 plus knots. There is no interference from the engines at all.
Compare that to the tranny i have out the back and its a new ball game, after countless times adjusting and relocating, its never been good, tuning out the engine interference has always been the main issue, and its never really given a good constent reading at speed. Then to complicate things a mackerel took a liking to it and bit it, as well as several times its taken a good knock from floating objects. You lose a bit of power through the wetbox, but its marginal compared to the benifates. Im no electronics expert but id agree and say interference is more a problem then bubbles for sure ...foxy

I bought a shoot through hull transducer with my 620. Cost about $180.00. Mounted mine about a metre from the stern. I read bottom at speed, but not that well. Sometimes it looses bottom, which is anoying, but mostly it is good. Cannot pick up fish at speed, but I can live with that. I used Johnsons baby oil. That was one of two options they recommend as it is pure mineral oil.

Agree with the others, when sounding around the picture is perfect. Any loss through the hull would be very minor.

    Hey Foxy,
That doesn't work on aluminium boats,so I am told.Is that correct?

    Re: wet box for tranduser

Dave, theres a different setup for alloy boats that requires the transducer to be mounted through the hull. Rhys (Revs57) has one in his boat working to a raymarine sounder. I believe that Greg (reefmaster) is fitting a simular one to his new boat with the furuno 585... foxy

Or make your own up with 4" or 6" PVC pipe, a screw cap lid and a standard transducer. Does work for alloy but the alloy takes a lot of the punch out. Here is a good alloy installation.
