    trying to undersatand

    hi,
    i am trying to understand a few figures re the moreton bay maring park re zoning
    recently the minister nelson-carr stated

    “The advice is in line with those of the International Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) which recommends at least 10% of each of the world’s ecological regions be effectively conserved in marine protected areas.

    there are 16 habitat regions in the marine park.

    at the community consultation meetings i was advised that they would be looking to protect a percentage of each habitat, and some they considered endangered may require more protection.

    so if there are 16 habitat regions within the park and the "science" has reccommended AT LEAST 10% protection

    this to me sounds like alot of area that will be "conserved in marine protected areas" = green zones

    is this a fair conclusion?

    cheers

    that would be a fair conclusion dazza,

    and as you highlighted, it will be AT LEAST 10% of each of the 16 identified habitats in the MBMP. it sounds like a large portion will be argued for by green groups. it will be interesting to see how they interconnect some of these protected habitats, it could be used as an excuse to close more areas under interconnecting zones.
    haven't heard from the Moreton Bay Access Alliance for a while, wonder what they're up to ???

    hi gelsec,
    how these zones interconnect will be very interesting

    someting else to think about, mangrove foreshores, not much of that left in the bay these days compared to 20 years ago, 10% of that gets closed straight away, then due to the decline in this habitat they decide to close say another 25%. how many recreational users are responsible for this destruction? i recon none, then why are the government targeting rec users, shouldn't the devlopers be putting in to fix the problem?
    unfortunatley we are an easy target
    cheers

    Developers = donations
    Donations = approvals
    Approvals = buildings
    Buildings = money
    Money = votes as Developers = Donations....

    and around the circle goes again.
    Cheers,
    Chris

    money, money, money ................
    that's why we need groups that represent the interests of the industry of boating/fishing as a whole to get involved because they will have a lot more clout than a bunch of fisho's. from what I have seen/read here, this is what the MBAA is representing, the industry interest.
    like BPD says above industry=money=votes.

    rumour has it that some of the green movement is pushing for an extension of the park to include the waters up to 50m deep east of Moreton Is. so the likes of Shallow Tempest, Brenon Shoals, the reefs around Flinders and all the coffee rock shallows off Moreton can be "protected habitat".The area off Pt Lookout also can in for mention as sheltered and easily accessed by small boats, the push was for all the rocks to be closed. This is mainly aimed at closing out spearfishers and the small boats(under 5m).

    most of those places would already be in the park wouldn't they?

    MBMP covers Qld state waters which are 3 nautical miles out to sea measured from baselines.
    Doubt they could extend the park into commonwealth waters.

    hi honda,
    areas that you have mentioned are already protected to some degree (ie flinders), imho the greenies will play the grey nurse card on this one, flinders has already got a protection zone around it, extend that another couple of miles and say good bye to hutches, brennans, smiths etc

    gelsec,
    good point re fed/state waters, 3 nm zone along the eastern side of moreton is alot of good fishing country, and also the habitat of gns

    cheers

    Re: trying to undersatand

    The federal government signed off on the international agreement of 10% and if they have to give some waters to meet that they will.
    It is require that corridors link all habitat areas togeather to allows the fish to travel safely between the areas. So you will see an increase in all exsisting protection zones.
    the person i was talking to about the extra areas know some greenies that are pushing for the mentioned areas. Third hand info but there is truth in it. Make sure yourself and everyone you know replies the MBMPR otherwise your boat will become a kids cubby house. Unless you dive or are greenie with a reason to enter the new zones.

    MBAA met last night to consider the principles announced by the Expert Advisory panel and we are currently preparing a response to the Minister and the EPA after receiving advice from our members and our own scientific team.

    As soon as that has been sent I will put a post onto the Ausfish website to update everyone on where the review is at now and MBAA's perspective on how its progressing, so if you don't mind I'll hold off posting anything for a few days. Should have something ready to go early next week and I will address the GNS issue there as well.

    Meawhile, have a look at the EPA website and you'll see the full set of principles recommended to EPA by the Expert Advisory panel. You need to consider them as a whole before getting too excited about or focussing on just one of them (ie the 10%) as people seem to be doing at the moment.

    Its not 100% clear on what role the Expert Panel chaired by Prof Greenfield will play from here on in but it seems that their main role is completed now that they have advised EPA on the principles and a review methodology. I think its likely that Prof Greenfield was commenting in the media in a private capacity rather than on behalf of EPA so his comments should be taken in that light.

    Still waiting for a reply on AUSFISH

    There will be days when the fishing is better than one's most optimistic forecast, others when it is far worse. Either is a gain over just staying home.

    Re: trying to undersatand

    I wonder if we could argue that the sand areas of Moreton Bay are at risk of becoming entirely barren and therefore should be declared as being the 10% extension of the marine park??

    Worth a shot anyway.

    Jack.
