What's your fav SP for Jacks?

Was just wondering what everybody's fav Sp's are for catching Mangrove Jacks?

Not really expecting to catch any at this wintery time of the year, but I've discovered a nice spot on the Gold Coast that I know does hold a population of them and I'm thinking of hitting it this weekend That is of course if this crazy wind ever drops!

Colours, sizes and lead weight sizes too please

    Thanks,

    Yeah Dorado,

I agree with killit. I have had little succes on SP's for Jacks. Mullet coloured hard bodies are my prefered lures for them. Ones with a nice tight action. I have caught a couple on SP's and they were on Squidgy fish 65 (black/silver). That was on a fishing trip in PNG. Every 2nd cast was producing a jack on hard bodies. So i thought i Would give Sp a go and struggled to keep up. May have been my lack of experience with SP's at the time.

    Good luck.......Shep.....

Terminator snapbacks 5 inch jerk baits in the "electric chicken" or "bloodworm" texas rigged. Sometime put a rattle in also..........not sure if that makes a hell of a difference!?!?!?!?!?!

Great! Thanks for your responses. That gives me some idea on what to use now. I'd be very interested to also know what braid line class to use?
    Cheers.

    Hi Dorado,

I use 20lb braid. Depending on where you are fishing my leader is from 30-60lb jinkai, up north you never know what could smash you back into the snags. But down here I think 30lb is probably more than enough.

Re: What's your fav SP for Jacks?

Gulp minnows 2-3 inch in pumpkinseed work best for me, but any gulp that you would use on bream like nuclear chicken or smelt shrimp is ok. Gulps will attract jacks around 35cm. Use jigheads like 1/4 in light current, or down to 1/20 if theres no current.

Id prefer a prawnstar tho if targeting 40-55cm range.

Might be a good idea targeting smaller jacks with sps for this time of the year. Big ones are gone to the reef, and those that are left, might be timid, but they are still around in winter.

Id use 5kg braid with 20lb leader. 30lb is too much for sps, it will slow down the action. Even 10lb leader is ok if you want to fish light. Make sure youve got a graphite rod for feel/action/ lure control. Jacks dont bite you off as much as people think. They rub you off on rocks, so judge your leader by our territory.

let us know how you go, I didnt know there were any spots worth targeting right now. It must be an enclosed system like a salt lake?

    cheers

Re: What's your fav SP for Jacks?

i wouldnt bother fishing any sort of area for jacks at all through this time of year, the water temp is right down which sends the jacks into a lethargic state, your best bet of landing one, is to go for a big oily bait, like a pilly or mullet fillet, they wont be chasing lures for a bit yet. hava crack anyway, you never know. cheers

Why target jacks this time of year even if the are there???? Plenty of other species to target that are in season.
