    Re: best electronics

Which ever one you choose, separate units are the way to go.
RaymarineRC435 GPS Chartplotter for thr GPS chartplotter, and Furuno FCV585 for the sounder. I have also been looking at the Interphase chart plotter, but cant get any info here locally.

    Try that for starters.
This has come about from my research,as I am in the same position,as you.

    Hi Dave,
mate just wondering why seperate units is the way to go? I assume thats for big boats, im sort of figuring for a tinnie a combo would be pretty effective.

    cheers

    Mike,
When one goes down, you loose both. The split screen ,generally is a hassle. They are not as easy to use,as two separate units.

PS there will be other comments as well, I should imaging from others.

    Re: best electronics

    Thanks mate,

In a bigger boat I can see the benefits, tinnie not so sure, looked at seperate units for the tinnie but couldnt justify it to be honest, with a bigger boat I reckon for the reasons you said, a no brainer... but also reckon people need to have charts just in case all fails, this whole thing about GPS/Plotters/Fishfinders and brands is a minefield, just gone through the process myself, looks like a combo for me for my needs, if i was looking at a bigger boat I think I would of gone for seperate units,, ease of use, screen size etc,,

    cheers

    Mate,
Go the Furuno FCV 585.Right now there isnt a sounder with screen size or sounder reliability and performance that comes near them.As far as GPS units go.I like Garmin for there ease of use but what ever GPS

    Mate,
Go the Furuno FCV 585.Right now there isnt a sounder with screen size or sounder reliability, user friendly controls and performance that comes near them.As far as GPS units go.I like Garmin for there ease of use but what ever GPS you get make sure you get the biggest screen you can fit/afford.Just makes life so much easier to read and use especially when your in a big sea or trying to do that tight drift pattern over a small piece of reef. Also make sure you get a card reader with your GPS unit.I have one for my Garmin 172c and i find now that i have the card reader i am logging all my trips. Also i am keeping on top of all the marks i put in after a day offshore. While the marks that i have put in are fresh in my mind i rename them and also place a comment so when i call that mark up i can rejog the old grey matter as to what is at that mark.As i said the bigger the screen the better that is my only regret with the Garmin 172c i wish i had gone for a bigger screen size.
    Cheers

    Re: best electronics

I agree with DNEJ. Separate units are the way to go no matter what size boat you have. You can mount 2 five in units in 1.5 inches more space than a single 7 inch unit. You will effectively have screen size comparable to a 10 inch display for way less money. If you buy a 5 inch combo you will not be happy with the unit in split screen mode. You will constantly be switching between fishfinder and gps and it gets old real quick. Even a 7 inch combo in split screen is too small and you can buy 2 five inch units for 7 inch money. Plus you get the benefits of not losing both units if you have a problem.

It sounds like you have a nice boat, don't skimp on the electronics you will not be happy. Get a Furuno Fishfinder 620 or 585, and then buy a decent chartplotter. Based on most threads I have read, most guys really like the Navionics Charts so you should look at a Lowrance, Eagle, Raymarine, Humminbird, or Furuno plotter.

    Good Luck!

did you end up getting an E-Tec. We have just purchased a Quintrex 540 Bowrider with 115 E-Tec. We absolutely love it.
