Hi all,
Im keen to head out to the spit to try my hand at the tailor this winter. I am wondering what would an appropriate setup be for this type of fishing. I guess i want to float out some pillies as this seems the most common way to fish for tailor. I need to purchase the whole works. ie. rod reel line and tackle. I want to purchase a middle of the range setup nothing too expensive or nothing too cheap that it wont last.
What are some suggestions?
From my limited experience.
Go a good graphite rod & Spinning reel with good retrieve speed.
The old school boys will say a 16ft surf rod & an Alvey, I can't argue that it wont take plenty of Tailor. It falls down if you want to do something other than hurling out a pilly with a big surf sinker. For simplicity & casting range you can't beat an Alvey, but if you want to spin slugs you'll want a Spinning reel with a good retrieve ratio. A mate uses an old warhorse Tss4 speed master and really gets the slug travelling. As a result he outfishes me 4 to 1. Don't be tempted to get a el cheapo reel, I got a Penn spinning reel for $35 bucks & was stoked until I worked out that my old 6500b Alvey had a faster retrieve speed.
I have got more tailor on slugs & poppers than bait, but that is probably because that's how I like to fish.
Alvey Reel & 12-14 foot surf rod are all you need. Check out your local tackle shop for choices. For line I would run 12-15 lb with a 20 lb leader off a swivel, ball sinkers to suit the conditions & 3 or 4 gang hook rigs to suit the size of the pillies.

Alvey put some reasonable combo's together. Look at the 650 size outfit for Tailor fishing. Wilson also put out some reasonably priced rods to go with an Alvey
Spinning is fun and effective but the outlay for an outfit that will do the job will be greater and need much more maintenance

I use a 13'6 wilson, an alvey reel, 15lb line,20lb leader, star sinkers, black swivels and 3/0 hooks ganged in threes. I use pillies for bait. I like my rod but check out the Gary Howard green Back it's a awesome tailor rod and you'll often see them as a combo with an alvey reel at local tackle stores..

Hi mate
Alvey has a couple of combos, incorporating basic reels (650 B series) and cheapish 12 ft or 13'6" rods. Alternatively you can buy a more expensive rod like a Gary Howard, snyder or Wilson. 15 lb line is what i use for the beach and rocks and have never had any problems with this.
My gear of choice is an Alvey 650 C5 (stainless) and a Gary Howard surf classic med (13'6")
