    Matt's first fish!

    Morning all,

Took my three year old out to Palm Cove jetty this morning with a bait jig to see if he could manage a fish from around the pylons.

I did the jigging as he would most likely drop his rod or somehow fall in but first few jigs and we had a small fish on. I got Matt to come over and asked if he wanted to reel it in and he grabbed hold of his rod then commenced winding.

At this stage we didn't know what the fish was but I could tell by the vibrations coming through the rod that it was a reasonably strong breed of fish.

A few seconds later and Matt had reeled in his first fish - a small Trevally about 8cm long. After a couple of photos to record the moment; the fish was returned to the water to grow a few extra kg's over the next few years

After the fish was returned to the water, I asked Matt "Do you want to get another fish?"
He replied within a second - "Yeah!!"

He only managed a small toad fish after that but a nice way to get your first fish and a quality one at that in a trevor

Great to hear mate. Good job getting the little fella into fishing, he has caught 1 more trevva than I have .

I think alot of the original passion for fishing in kids comes from if they catch something their first time around. I think a good teacher who is willing to take the time to show the kiddies the skills, and lets the little ones reel one in or something, will be the best at creating new anglers. If they see results within the first few tried, they will love it forever.

Good job mate, and good luck in all ya future fishing with the youngan.

    Morning Guys,

Thanks for all your kind posts (TheClick, Big_Puff_Daddy and Tanglefoot).
It was certainly one of those moments you realise that they will never live again (getting their first fish) and you were there with them for the experience.

Disorderly - Mate, I was just keen to get him a fish more than anything.
We'd been to Palm Cove 3 times prior to yesterday and he was probably the most unlucky kid on the whole jetty. He'd get bites but nothing that would take a hook be the bait prawns, Gulp worms or anything else I came up with the idea of the bait jig by accident sorting through my tackle box the other day when i found them and thought that this may be easier, and thankfully by luck or by process it was

    The tinny?
Well I am going to get one of these. Got my license a few months ago and was going to get the boat a while later but then there was a sale on big TV's just prior to Origin this year and I got to pay that one off before I go outlaying more money on a boat at this stage. If for nothing other than Origin, AusFish looks awesome on a 40" LCD TV

Boat should be getting garaged just prior to Christmas at this stage, just right for a serious assault on the big jacks at that time and barra when the season opens in Feb !

    Keep him at it????
Hardyhead, he asks to go fishing most weekends

Most sessions last only about 20 minutes before he wants to go home but that'll change with the bait jg if he can get some decent weather and keep landing the fish

The 20 minutes is pretty much par for the course from what I understand for his age. Still 20 minutes fishing is better than 30 minutes mowing and Palm Cove is just up the road from where we live so a 5 minute drive is nothing when there's photos like these to be had and have him constantly tell me "I caught a fishy and put him back in the water to swim away"
    Regards,

    Andrew.
