Experiencing some very good rainfall here in Townsville and this is keeping me away from the fishing. Expecting all sorts of things when the sun comes out again soon. Well, hopefully soon. Anyway my question is............will there now be too much fresh around thus slowing the catch rate right down or will it bring the fish on. Beaches or the rocks................hmmm!!! maybe the rocks again.

I live down south in Boyne island and when we get alot of rain it flushes all the prawns, salmon and barra downstream.... after it rains alot get straight fishin and catch some fish!!!

You might do OK up north, but down here in the SE corner a big rain after a drought means a heap of sediment will come down the river..... and all the herbicides and pesticides washed into the water too, which have been storing up over the drought period. How has your river been till now? OK with the big wet a few months ago? You should be fine.

After the rain it's the time to hit the estuaries, there's that many prawns get washed out at the bohle, you can see the water boiling around you with feeding trevs, queenies, and salmon, I'd expect the barra to be around too, though I've never caught any when the prawns are running like that. Usually you can just anchor up and wait thill the water boils and cast out silver spoons for a quick retreive and you'll pick up some nice queenies and trevs, even if you don't get any big specimens, use lighter line for some neck snappin action, I use 6lb braind when the smaller ones are around, and geez do they give me a run for my money.

I need a boat. I just do not have that many opportunities to get into the prawns and am yet to experience the water bubbling from Trevor attacks. One day......

i reckon the mouth of the ross wouldn't be too bad, or the casino might be a little stirred up with the dirty water...
Might try the casino rock walls if rain lets up a bit
Josh, since you have a 4wd I reckon you should give Salmon creek a go. I've heard alot of good things from that creek. I fished it once with no luck. But i would like to get out there again one day.

2x things I've heard.
Firstly, that prawns etc that live/breed in the estuaries actually start spawning when the fresh water levels rise, so a lot of blokes say that the bream / Trev / Jew fishing (those that eat shrimp) heats up after the rain.
Secondly, A mate of mine was a pest sprayer and told me that when they have done ice samples from Antarctica, they have shown up pesticides in the ice.
I'm hitting the Brissy river tomorrow hoping that the old blokes are right about their "Prawn Spawning" theories !!!.
Further to that, any little fish/tadpole/shrimp that live in the little puddles that form in drains and storm water pipes etc when the weather is dry, get flushed out into the river and estuaries when the rain water flushes them out, so fishing areas where fresh water runs into the river/estuaries could prove productive.

Scalem - most of the rivers get flushed pretty regulary up there with the monsoonal rain I think..
The lakes might go alright?
