A few friends and I went 50km north of Yeppon the other day and from the moment we put the spoons in the water we got smashed by grey mackeral . We caught our bag limit in 1 1/2 hours with the average weight of 18lbs . After this session on greys which were magic we motored out and decided to do some trolling of big baits for the big stripey ones (spanyards) We had just click the drag on after letting all three ribbon fish out turned to a mate and it was on . All three rods went off . A treble hook up of big spanyards . After pulling these fish in we rebaited and then we got a double. We kept doing this until we reached our bag limit and then went home.
Got our bag of grey and spanish mackerel in 3 hours was the best session ever .
Fishing a gutter at Marcus beach with my dad. 3 morning sessions in a row we caught tailor, bream. dart, flathead & sole, each session, all on pilchards.
Will never forget it.
The best sessions I remember were when I was a kid.
Out in a rented tinnie with my parents in Port Phillip Bay.
Interestingly the bloke who ran the boat-hire business was totally blind.
He could hear which boats were his and would wade out to meet you as you came back in.
My older sister was throwing up to encourage the fish.
Mum just about pooped herself when a dolphin jumped over the boat.
Dad was re-baiting my handline whilst I still held the line.... you guessed it he tugged the line a bit and I was still in fishing mode... Strike, embedded the hook into his finger. He managed to pull it out.
There was a long-standing record of me always catching the biggest flathead of whatever fishing trip we went on.
This time I had pulled in my usual big fat flattie. The old man actually caught one that was about 5cm longer than mine. But this flathead looked pretty crook - it was really skinny and bony, so mine was much heavier.
We always caught a good feed back then. (I wish I could do that now)
I still let him claim the title of winning fish for that trip - even though we both knew mine was a better fish.
Towards the end of last year my brother in law & myself fished the upper Noosa River & Weyba Creek to catch a total of 36 Flathead (only started counting after 6 - 8 Flathead caught, can't remember) 4 Esturary Cod, 6 Whiting, 1 Bream & 3 good sized Yellow Tail Pike. These were all caught on soft plastics, within a 3hr 20min session. Besides the 7 undersized & 2 oversized Flathead, 2 undersized whiting, 3 undersized cod, ALL the fish were legal & ALL the fish were relased. I kid you not! It was a day to remember - By the way the largest Flathead was 79cm & we got busted off 5 times between us.
