G'Day,
I was reading an article on attaching a rope ,to an anchor chain,and these pics were attached.
Instead of using the normal round the thimble type splice,the rope is spliced to the chain direct.Would be great in the case of using an anchor winch.
It may not be new to a lot of you,but it was new to me, so I thought I would put up a post, for those that were not aware of same.
Has anyone used this system?

that looks an effective method David, not as lumpy as a back splice on the chain link. the 8 strand version looks particularly neat.

Might be practical with some electric anchor winches as once it's spliced like that then you are sort of stuck with it, difficult to change quickly if required?
Kerry,at first, I thought the same thing.Then I realised I have never taken the shackle off the anchor rope at any time,unless I need a new rope.
Anchor end, most definitely.
I find the shackle a bit of a nuisance,so in my case, I think it will be worth a try.

Dave, If I had any reason to change the anchor setup then I would also be changing the rope first? In any situation the first thing I would probably change is the rope as I run 12mm nylon and 16mm silver, just depends on the situation and one size chain fits all (the bigger the better).
Somehow being able to change out the rope and the chain and the anchor independently to me offers more options? But I suppose it depends on how one is setup?

Just out of interest,do you think 8mm chain,for 18 feet aluminium,about correct?
Weight would be about 850kg ,not loaded. Probably add extra 200kg for gear,fuel etc, not including bods.

8mm (5/16") doesn't sound too bad? what sort of length? Short or long link?
Kerry, you are now educating me.I didnt know there was a difference.My local hardware has it by the barrel.Is one better than another?

That chain in your pics appears to be short (medium) link chain. Typically used as anchor chain with or without gypsy. Short link is a dense chain, heavier than long link, more links per metre and the long link chain will have bigger (wider/longer) links but the chain diam is still the same.Originally Posted by dnej
