new sounder gps combo

hey was in the market for a new gps sounder combo just anyone's thought on which brand to buy i have around 1600 to spend and want one with a plotter

For that kind of money I'd be looking at a furuno fcv 620 sounder (around $1200)and a stand alone plotter.....Might cost you $1800-$2000 for both ,but better with the two units.
I have a Garmin 178c colour combo ($740 from usa)which is being sent away under warranty for the sounder,but it means I also lose my plotter for the duration also.
I am also finding it a bit of a pain to be flicking from split screen sounder to half sounder ,half plotter and back again continually when I am sounding on contour lines for drop offs and fish schools.
I will soon buy a furuno sounder and use the garmin mainly as a plotter(when I get it back.).
Something for you to think about anyway.

I have the same setup & agree about the flicking back & forth. It would be ok on a 20" screen, but the small screen is not a lot of use in split mode for anything other then general "there is the bottom & O yes and there is the land" kind of thing.

IMO, never have a combo. loose one and they are both gone.


Stand alone units are the go.

Furuno / Lowrance sounders and garmin GPS. again, IMO.

I agree with all of the other replys. If you have room at your helm for a separate fishfinder and a separate gps that is the way to go. It is a little more expensive but well worth it. I also agree Furuno is the way to go for a fishfinder. You can't do better than the FCV-620 or 585. Garmin makes a good plotter for the money.

The garmin 298 is in your budget and you even get free charts at the moment it has to be the best value for the dollars going and every one sells em.Good luck Dan.....

I have just changed from a Lowrance Combo to a Furuno FCV-620 and Eagle Intellimap and absolutely Luv it, cost was $1700 for the 2 without the map card. The gold chart I think now sells for about $300.
