    Airborne at South Straddie!!.

At South Straddie over the long weekend a boatie got himself into some trouble after dropping off some surfers.
Here`s a link for the story and great pics.

Wondering would it damage the motor to get airborne like that? and what kind of damage would you expect to the hull?.

fabulous shots there, reckon he did OK handling that wave, at least he wasn't vertical. It looks like the guy attached to the surfboard has duck dived, probably dragged back away from the boat by the board before it landed, might have been safer to stay onboard the boat.
Doubt it would have done much damage to the hull landing at that angle, probably severe damage to the driver's trousers

I don`t know the whole story but the boardrider bailed out of the boat with his board!.
Might not be vertical but it`s damn close!.
How the heck the driver didn`t fall backwards is a mystery to me.

    Fantastic photos.
He got some serious air off that wave.
One of those situations where noone would believe you unless you had photos.
    The guys a legend.

mako, yep, I meant the surfer would have been safer in the boat, it could have landed on top of him in the water, the wave probably dragged him and the board clear.

    cheers

There is a blown up full front page version of the middle pic in the Gold Coast Bulletin today, amazing picture!!!, worth buying the paper for.
The driver looks like he is supported by the seat but I wouldn`t be surprised if the surfer had no choice, not much to hold on to!.

A trip out with Bill Corten on his bar crossing course can give similar results if you aren't careful

Cross enough coastal bars and this will happen to you and if your good enough this is all that will happen If this in any way damaged the boat, it's a very poor boat. In the long run if your not prepared to have this happen to you it can be avoided by not crossing bars

When it happened to me i faired a tad worse 3 waves in the boat, still made it threw though got to love a true self drainer

Have done that training in a lifesaving zodiac in 8 to 10ft swell, at least they have soft bottoms not like that thing, Also i think the guy paniced and hit it to fast, in that situation my advice would be to back of at the top wait for the nose to go over and then gun it again, that is what i learnt, but i have also swamped a few zodiacs practicing this.

part i found amusing in the report was the "rouge wave" syndrome, it looks to me as just part of a set

definitely uncomfortable, but with the camera angle from behind I 'm not sure it is as vertical as it looks for the landing

    Great pics there,
i went out the seaway for the first time ( well other than to surf straddie) in my little 3.7m tinny today and there were some big sets coming in, I actually find it scarier navigating the broadwater itself in my little boat.

If he's planning on doing that gear more often i wonder if he's looking at buying a cat Ha Ha. Thumbs up to the photographer

They just referring to the big wave you get every now and then which always happens, all surfers know about it and wait for it.
I would say many are getting swell confused with surf I think there is a big difference, this guy was lucky not to dunk his motor or stall at the very least, could be deadly in this kind of surf.
I think having surfed for many years would make it easy for any boatie to avoid what happened here.
My question was referring mainly to cavitation and what damage that might do to a motor esp at full throttle, I have dunked a motor before so I know this is to be avoided at all costs.
I don`t think he had any choice but to go full power all the way through it.

I'm with blaze, "rogue wave" is a term used too loosely by "journalists". Rogue waves are ocean waves. At least they've stop calling every large wave a "freak wave", for me that term raises images of idiot waves running around the ocean yelling and screaming at everything.
