    Queen's Birthday a bit fishy

G'day all, looked at the weather and tide predictions and decided that a fishing trip with my son was in order. Normally I would be on the water before sun up but this time decided to make it gentlemens' hours and arrived at Wynnum boat ramp just on 8am and even at that hour there was plenty of chill in the air. Originally I was planning to do a trip regardless of wind but if it was windy the Gold Coast canals were looking good but seeing as the wind dropped off a new spot X just outside of Wello seemed like fair game. Boat started first go and it wasn't long before I was screaming past Wello and aiming for my new spot. Once I arrived the first placcie hit the water and was smacked almost instantaneously and after a few short runs and a lot of head shaking I land my first keeper for the day being a nice 39cm squire. Another cast and the same SP suddenly digs in and at first I thought it was a snag (very common in that area) but as I try to get it off the bottom I was met with a blinding run in the opposite direction. There was a lot of weight in this fish so I played it and my son had his first bit of landing net practice for the day as we dragged in keeper number two which turned out to be a 61cm flathead. The day progressed quickly and the fish kept coming on board although not all keepers. Returned a flounder, a couple of 35cm model squire and a few smaller flatties. All started to quieten down as the tide dropped and as I called it quits the reel screams off again. Was a nice fish with strong head shakes but it spat the hook before getting it to the boat. Set up another drift and let the son have a shot and he jags and pulls in a nice flatty measuring 54cms. "Just two more casts and it was home time" I said so the last two casts and they both yielded another couple of nice flatties which came in at 45cms and 48cms which make a nice table size. All in all a most enjoyable day out and quality time with one of my kids. Back at the ramp by just after 12pm and home in plenty of time to tidy up and pack the gear away.

    Regards,

    Poodroo

Thanks mate. Considering we weren't out there long enough to even put on sunblock I think we did okay to score a feed of fish. What's more it was kind of nice to just wake without the alarm and just leave whenever.

Well there is no doubting that your nephew had a ripper time out on the water today. His only boggle was how cold it was. I am sure his sibbling is going to make sure she gets out next trip.

G'day Adam, those fish WERE big but yeah you're right, he makes them look even better. I would have got him to take the photos of me holding them but my mug in the shot is a lot less attractive.

Thanks yellahunter. The young fella had the choice of either a lovely roast dinner cooked by mum or some of dad and son's fresh caught fish fillets. He went the fish. What else can I say? That's my boy!!!

Love the lizzards-Is the one in the first photo a bar tail? If so it's a very good size indeed.

    Cheers

Thanks juju. They certainly provided a good feed. I was full after eating one of the flatties and one fillet off the squire. There is still a lot left for tomorrow night.

Yes John it was a bar tail. In fact they all were. They impressed me with size today and they gave me some much needed practice in filleting. I am used to filleting bream and squire but flathead are just a little more of a challenge. By the second one I was filleting them like a pro (only half the pace).

Thanks BilgeBoy. #2 is well and truly getting some use and I am having a ball getting on the water and getting a feed. Initially I was kind of embarrassed about having an old rough and ready tinny when so many lucky buggers have brand new boats which look the part but since I have been getting out there I have seen worse and have had a reality check in the meantime. There are lots of people out there who would love to own #2 and coming back into Manly Harbour today I saw a lot of those people standing on the rocks trying to catch a feed doing it the hard way. I consider myself pretty lucky these days to have what I have. The fish have never tasted so good.

Thanks T. My son thought it was great just to have the boat ride and watch dad in action but letting him reel a fish in for himself was just a bonus. He doesn't know it yet but I have a lovely Synergy spinner as a spare reel and I might just put it on his own rod to add a bit of quality to it so that he can use his own outfit next time. His existing rod is good enough to do battle with larger fish but the reel on it is below standard which is why I didn't take it with us.

Thanks Freeeedom. The conditions certainly made the session enjoyable. Days like yesterday make me happy to be alive.

Thanks Darryn. I have to ask why you knew I would have a post in here? Are you getting to know me that well that you are confident I will catch a feed when I go out or was it just a lucky guess?
