    How big is your butt?

Why do some boat rods have longer butts than others? Is it personal preference or strength in the rod? A mate of mine has a custom surf rod with hardly a butt at all? By butt I mean the distance between the reel and the lower end of the rod? The longer butts seem to be difficult for kids to handle.
    Cheers

For small to medium sized fish, I use a regular sized rod handle and just fight the fish with my arms, but for large species, I like to use a rod with a longer "butt". I put the handle into my gut and can get plenty of leverage against the fish. Personal preference.

Castlemain, as far as surf rods go, depends on what style of reel you are using.
For example, Alvey reel, short butt length, maybe 5 - 10".
    Threadline/spinning reel, medium butt length, say 10 - 18".
Overhead reel, longer butt length, say 18 - 30".
The reason for the above, comfort/efficiency factor when using the reel, determined by balance, casting/winding actions etc.
Boat rods a bit different, main difference being more runners for an overhead reel, less for a threadline, butt length pretty much the same, depends more on the length/action of the blank.
These of course are all subject to personal taste, as Carpo says. Personally I use threadline reels on short butts for my surf fishing rods.
    Cheers.
