I know it is almost a year away but Im already starting to get pumped up. I have booked to go to Marion Reef with Nomad Charters. Lanks (Ausfish Member) and Duncan (Fish Head) have also booked so it should be a good week. Hopefully will come back with a few new PB's, sore arms and a lot of stories.
I am keen to know if anyone else has been or know of anyone else who has been with Nomad charters and can make any suggestions on tackle etc to stock up on earlier. Was checking out their web page and was wondering is the tackle prices listed available when you are there or are they at a discounted price. Also has anyone who has been ever had problems with sea sickness or is it a matter of sticking to the reef when the weather is a bit rough.
I have a couple of Dvds of their's so they are going to be pretty worn out by the time we actually go. It gives me a good excuse to go tackle shopping every week between now and then.
if you dont mind me asking, what damage did it do to the bank account? before tackle... sounds like a blast and im wanting to orgtanise something like this for myself at somestage
we are looking at next yr as well - have already booked our annual holiday at the end of this yr, and also they are nearly booked out for this yr.
We were looking to do the Ken reef or rec reef trip and it is about $7k p/p. it's rather expensive, but it's the sort of thing you would put down as a "once in a lifetime" trip.
well worth saving for in my book. If you spend a year saving and then a week of amazing, mindblowing fishing, you'll remember it for life.
I think including all plane flights, staying at Hamilton Island one night either side it is about $5500. I think it is worth it, it will be a once in a life time experience and will hopefully catch fish that are once in a life time as well. Seven days of fishing at an isolated location 400kms offshore that only gets fished once a year, I cant wait.
their basic charter is around $4500 and the top of the line one is about $9500.
I haven't been on nomad before, but i have fished around that region and caught a few of the monsters you see em catching. Nomad supply the rod and reels(unless you got a stella or saltiga leave your cheapo stuff at home). You get to use their gear for the week and return it at the end.
You get to use their lures and terminal stuff, but they keep a running tally each day of how much you lose. So you can easily go through a few hundred bucks each day in tackle.. x that by 7 days and it adds up.
I'd buy a good set of split ring pliers, some 300lb O-rings to attack your lure split ring to. and see if you can get a bunch of lures cheap and upgrade em yourself. might work out cheaper.
But, the biggest piece of advice I can give you. Start going to the gym or at least get yourself in reasonable physical condition. Seriously, if you dont you will regret it.
my dad went on a 2 week charter out to swains with them..
he absolutely loved it. The weather wasnt calm but he said that the fishing was GREAT!!!
he came home with some good pictures of some big reds and big coral trout...
Have fun
cheers alex
