Hey Traviso182 fishing for jew is is exactly what you described, sitting out all night, cold and lonely with numb fingers catching nothing. Every now and then a big silver-sided slab of muscle will bulldoze through and if your lucky you may land him. Jew fisherman are like people who play the pokies, you only hear about the nights they win or catch a jewie, you seldom hear of their losses (both are an addiction by the way so be careful). As for catching jew under the bribie bridge my old man used to do nothing else, but this was well over 20 years back. Live yellowtail pike on an 8/0 - 10/0 hook, 100 pound handline in a bucket. Because of the tidal run in this area you only have the tide changes to be able to fish unless you plan on using mountains of lead which straight away dashes your chances. He used to tie up to the pilons themselves (bit dodgy nowadays though with the boat traffic under there) and only fish nights with very small variations in tide changes so as to maximise the time he could keep his bait in the strike zone (eg: instead of 1/2hr either side of slack water he may get 1 or even 2 hrs of slow flow either side of the tide change) He insisted on the bait being directly beside the pilon as he was certain that the big fish sat in the eddies and only came out to hunt when they didn't have to work too hard for a feed. Then he would sit back pour a coffee and wait for the handline in the bucket to start rattling, let it run a bit (the fish will be turning the pike around in it's gob ready to swallow) when/if it stops hit it hard and hang on, if it don't stop then sooner or later you'll have to do something, you'll just have to work out when for yourself. They do come out of there regularly but just like any poker machine addict won't tell you about their lucky machine a jew fisho will be very shy in sharing their secrets also, as they will have spent many a cold, lonely, fishless night for one success. My Dad bought fish home up to 50 pound from under that bridge and if I tryed hard enough I could even dig out the old polaroids to prove it but I really couldn't be bothered just like I really couldn't be bothered feeding a poker machine my hard earned all night or sitting out in the cold in the hope of catching a jewie that may or may not be there (but according to you they aren't)
Cheers all
Kev
Where there's waters there's fish. 99% of the time.
Ive done battle with the jew there 20 yrs ago and it is a very uncomfortable environment sitting there with the westerlies chilling ur agates to pebbles.
I have scored there three times over a 4 yr period tho and my apetite for it is back again im heading there next time the conditons are right.
I do not have any pics of the jew i have caught but good memories of lifting them into the boat and bad bad memories of endless nights (some stages 6 nights a week) of pain and no sleep and cold that sets right into your core. The heater in the car might be hot but you dont feel it for an hour driving home. You sit in a steaming bath until you begin to feel again an hour and a half after you have left the bridge.
I hate the cold like that but those memories will have me back there soon again.
Is that proof enough?
