I am chasing a new reel and can get a Penn Spinfisher 850ss new for $169, ths seem to be a good price. Any thoughts or things i need to concider?

That sounds like a good price Jewie. I have heard that Penn are now going to fit these with anti-reverse mechanisms - do you know if the ones you are looking at have that???
I have a couple of 850's, tough as nails, no frills reels. wish they came with a spare spool though. I have queeried about spools, they're not cheap.

You are looking at the 8500SS, nice reel bullet proof and easy to service yourself I had one of the old 850SS's for nearly 20yrs and I sold it for more than I paid for it. They are heavy and low tech I have changed to the shimano spheros 14000FA you should be able to pick one up for around $200, they are lighter lots smoother cast better and they can be upgraded to become a cheaper version of the Stella
Deiter, yeah mate, its the new model with the anti reverse mech and your right about the spare spool. You can get one but an extra $80 dolllars.

I guess you mean 'infinite anti reverse" as they have anti reverse!
They were an awesome reel when they were made in the US....
Now personally I wouldnt buy one as they are made in China and the internals arent what they used to be.
For that sought of Money I would stick to a shimano and have the 10year warranty under my belt.A 6500 Baitrunner is only $30 more......
What are you using the reel for?

Pistol_p, i will be using the reel for beach fishing for jewies. I considered the baitrunner but was worried about all the sand and saltwater causing grief with the mechanisms.
I will also use the reel for bottom basihing for snapper, some kingie work etc.
When it comes to looking after reels i am not the best, so i thought this would be a good reel for my needs and bad habits such as covering my reels in sand and saltwater through silly mishaps wich i will not disclose at ths point!

mate i reckon the batirunner is the way to go for you, perfect for snapper...and jew, its not like your gunna be doin much flat out casting with the penn anyway, and yeah its all made by jarvis walker now. id spend the extra and get the baitrunner, you then have a bulletproof gun snapper, jew and reef fishing reel
Mad max, i will be doing plenty of casting, lures for jewies and tailor fishing of the rocks/ beach. I have been trying to take a leaf out of Aussiefools book this winter in persue if a nice bronzie off the rocks.

hey, a Spinfisher will outlast ANY Shimano and especially so on the Beach, Shimano might have the name and market share, but a Spinfisher has "the runs on the board" never hear of anyone saying I sent $190 on my Spinfisher and it XXX but yo hear almost evry day someone spent $$$$ on (say) a Stela and it sh!t itself, and I have had both, the 25 year old Spinfishers are STILL pulling in fish and some of my Shimanos have "gone to god" after far less time (and were considerably more expensive)
Thats the main reason for my choice.

The baitrunner's are bulletproof, and shimano knows it. Thats why they have a 10 year warranty.
I am happy with my shimanos but as i have read on here countless times the warranty aint worth the paper its written on.
I use my spheros for beach/rock/kayak fishing and it has a hard life and may go for over a week without rinse if I am camping and it is fine inside and out and kayak fishing is as tough as you can get on a reel. IT's a choice between the bullet proof penn and the shimano which is a little more refined but both are good reels with my penn I replaced the drag washers a few times and a handle in 20yrs, 2 yrs with the spheros and no dramas so far.
I doubt if there is any Shimano spinning reel built as strongly as the old spinfishers regardless of price i know plenty of guys around here that use them for light game fishing rather than overheads with good reliability. Jewie if you intend chucking your reel around the sand and salt water dont buy anything other than an Alvey unless you feel like spending another $169 sooner rather than later.
