Woke up early Saturday morning a little hung over but still keen to hit the water and go for a paddle. Launch my Kayak from Vicky Point and paddle to around to the Eastern side couchie. It was pretty choppy out there, was not expecting that much wind but I persisted on. I recently installed a sounder into my yak, which has helped out allot locating the drop offs and structure. Started off pretty quite, only managed a couple of small squire, parrot, Flathead and I lost count of how many pike. There seems to be a plague of them there!! . Paddled over to the NE side of the island where things started to get interesting. Found a nice drop off that went from 5ft to 10ft, as soon as the plastic hit the water I was nail by something big, but was bitten off straight away. Rigged up again drifted over the same spot and BANG! I was on again. My line was screaming off my reel. The fish went one way and then came back the other spinning my Kayak around in circles. Would have looked quite funny to the other boaties around! After a couple of minutes I got the fish beside the yak and netted him. (Picture below). Ended up catching another 2 the same, lots of fun on 4lb gear and from a Kayak.

Bennywise,
That doesn't look like a Pike in your photo.
Looks like a mackerel of some type.
Cheers, Jeff

Yes Jeff, it was a mackerel my first from a yak. There seemed to be a school of them around the NE side.
that looks like great fun! when the longtail were thick a month ago i was thinking about towing my yak out to the midst of them and anchoring the boat so i could sneak up better.....that may be the go for next year.
