hey m8 the squid havent been around in any numbers at Shornecliffe as yet but it shouldnt be long b4 they show up I will try and get there to give it another go next week ,if there on you will know just look at the floor of the jetty if there are ink stains, there being caught ,was not a good season last year for them so lets hope it improves this time round.I hit it fairly hard if there on so look out for me I use a 7 meter squid/pike rod and will have on a green balaclava, come say hi.Cheers Snas

glow stick is the go but i found small pink jig will do the job.i move around both sides from 1/2 way to the end.the locals take the prime spot at the very end.listen for squirting sound and they wont be far.let it sink about 1/m then lift up slow and wind in slack.repeat.they swim in groups .ive seen people use 2 jigs a foot apart and catch two at once.if all else fails they cheap to buy especially if your friends with a trawler.

i have caught a 0.8kg squid on rapala f-5 yesterday in manly harbour. there should be a lot around when they can be caught on fishing lure.ha ha
might have a go on saturday and do some pike fishing as well.
how much is a yo-zuri generally, i saw them in a tackle shop as around 20....that's expensive!

Re: best time to catch squid

Squid are a funny animal as is somedays they will just savage anything thats in the water and other times there very specific in what size and colour they want to attack,I use anything from a 2.5" up to 4.5" and have several in each colour and various shapes, the yozuri,s work very well but do hurt the back pocket if lost.Mainly they will go for the pink colour at around the 3" size this is what I would recommend for a newby to squiding, but have heard a lot of promise about the black coloured jigs personally ive never used 1 but have got 1 to try very soon .hope this helps Snas

I find the smaller jigs work better and for some reason the Yozuri's work better than the copies. I like pink but have not persisted with other colors. They should be in good numbers by now

If you guys want a feed of squid go winter whiting fishing. Squid follow winter whiting schools around picking off the edges as they go.

I usually fish two light rods for winter whiting and have a third baitcater rod with a sinker on the bottom and three jigs spaced 50-60cm apart comijg up the line. I let the sinker drag on the bottom and the bottom jig about 2 feet up. You need to use the right jigs tho the neutrally bouyant ones that neither sink or float and there are several brands on the market I prefer yo-zuris tho.

Usually I will score 3 whiting to 1 squid and take home a couple of klos of squid and probably about 40ish large winter whiting in three hours.
