    Adjusting trailer coupling

    Hi all

Last weekend I changed changed my 48mm to a 50mm tow ball. Went to and back from the ramp and all was sweet until I had to reverse up a kurb when the trailer ball coupling came off the tow ball .

It may have been that it wasn't engaged properly in the first place but want I want to know is how to properly adjust the ball coupling?

I tried playing with the screw at the top on the coupling and it won't budge . Also, now it's really hard to disengage the coupling and the tow ball, probably due to the new 50mm ball .

    Suggestions anyone?

Sounds like the coupling wasn't on right.
There should be a lock nut on the adjustment screw. Just loosen that off a bit and the screw should be easy to undo/do.
When I adjust I do it on level ground and put the coupling on the ball and tighten until all the play is taken out when you try to lift the front of the trailer up and down. When I do this I make sure there is no grease on the ball. This will upset the adjustment.
Grease can be put on afterwards.
It might need a bit of mucking about as sometimes when you adjust them to take out all the play you can't get them off again. If that happens just back-off the adjuster until you can just get the coupling off the ball.
    Cheers then

PS you were lucky the thing didn't come adrift along the way somewhere.

do it exactly like finga reckons freddo. just make sure though that when you're adjusting up the screw thingo, that the other thingo with the handle (that you pull upwards to disengage the coupling) stays in the fully down position, ie hasn't lifted up slightly from the adjustment screw being done up too tight. learnt this the hard way with a bike trailer, thank goodness for short safety chains.

should use a pin (cleaves pin i think there called ) to lock down your handle i the down postion when towing stops things bouncing around
    i agree with finga
    all the best
