    Exclamation Updated PFD standard

Hey all, just sharing the word. Aust Standard1512 has been updated, better check before it gets serious.
Markings on life jackets to comply with standards
Life jackets or PFDs that are manufactured to comply with the Australian standards require legible markings which include the following:
    • manufacturer's name, trade name or trademark
    • the words "PFD TYPE 1", "PFD TYPE 2" or "PFD TYPE 3" in block letters not less than 6 mm high, with the words below: "CAUTION: May not be suitable for all conditions" or for a child's FPD, the words "CHILD'S PFD TYPE 1" and a caution advising that a child wearing the PFD should be under competent supervision
    • manufacturer's model identification, batch identification and year of manufacture
    • intended body mass range
    • illustrated instructions for donning the PFD
    • instructions for storage and care
    • information related to replacement or checking of gas cylinders of inflatable PFDs.
Purchasers can ensure their PFDs are compliant with the standards by having jackets bearing the SAI-Global "five ticks" symbol or the compliance marks of other certification bodies.
You should also check the condition of your PFD to ensure:
    • parts which are visible when the wearer is submerged (from the armholes up) are high visibility in colour
    • it is in good working order and elements such as stitching and colour have not deteriorated with age
    • webbing tapes and chords are at least 2.5 cm wide when wet and designed to resist roping and rolling when in use
    • stitching on the jacket is in lock stitch and not starting to unravel
    • fittings are free from burrs and sharp edges. Press studs are not a compliant method for fastening a buoyancy aid.
Life jackets with a Standards Australia mark (pictured right) must also carry the label "PFD1".

    Re: Updated PFD standard

Thankyou for the post have printed it out ,when a person is this weekend heading out to buy a new child's PDF because the hardly used an near new one they own now fails the height test by 1mm in the PFD 1 writing they know they are nothing more than a puppet, damn thugs and thuggery, if an individual vandalised our property and reduced it to nil value I would have recourse not so here, lawful thuggery!

Hard to believe this is the same country I grew up in.

    Still spewing.

    Re: Updated PFD standard

Hi Ozscott thanks for the interest, no need for anyone to check it out the PFD 1 is a marlin brand and is AS1512 and complies in every way except for the writing above the Caution etc the writing by vernier caliper is 4.5mm - too small to be legal needs to be 6mm tall, jacket has never seen a boat and is around 4 months old.

If I got the gist of the last discussion thread a while ago the authorities kept the standard effectively secret and only updated the public domain during and due to that thread. Too late for me - upshot is I got rolled! Back ally style.

    Re: Updated PFD standard

No, it has never seen a boat, getting fined for it would add insult to injury. Although many people will over the next couple of years I am sure, entrapment by any definition!

    Re: Updated PFD standard

Mate it's more than that, they are thugs and cowboys and can do whatever they like with impunity just like in any despot country the people have no rights, being fined or purchasing the equipment, either way I was punished for following the law in the first place and purchasing the jacket.

The day is here where a person has to protect themselves from the law as importance no1, and not expect the law to protect the person.

    Ok, I'll step up.
I really don not think the standard was changed to A P!ss you off, or B to raise revenue, or even C because they can.
Perhaps I'm being Polyanna -but surely the standard was changed with the safety of boaties and particularly kids in mind.

    Re: Updated PFD standard

Yeah Bob I agree although if anyone can tell me the the added safety 1.5mm of ink makes?
Physics says that everything has mass, in theory and physics (if the jacket is used for flotation) this extra 1.5mm of printers ink makes for a more unsafe jacket than one with 4.5mm. But it would be easier to throw a distance due to the extra weight, possibly this is their contention, getting the jacket to a child who doesn't have one but needs one, idiocy deserves idiocy IMVeryHO.

I understand I have no set rights outide of criminal law in this country and that they can steal from me/whoever at their discretion/deem, although a vent is a vent and if more people had the face not to roll over every time, we as a whole wouldn't be treated like scat with such ease.

    Re: Updated PFD standard

If your lifejacket complies with Marine Orders part 25, Appendix 1, Section 2, it is legal in Qld waters, but the printing on these jackets must be 25mm high!

    Re: Updated PFD standard

Do you reckon eventually they are working towards making it compulsory to wear them all the time on all size boats? Seems to be a big push now days for the self inflating ones with the big seller being they are less bulky and easy to wear all the time.

    Re: Updated PFD standard

    Dunno.
Can't see them making passengers on the Fairstar pack-rape wear them, so where do you draw the line.
Those inflating ones are realy good gear, but I believe they too now have an expiry date.

On a big picture, it seems to be the way of Government. Someone does something stupid and 2 years later there is a response-sometimes its misguided or impractical, sometimes just expensive.
How many examples would you like - the tragedy of those kids who had to swim up at Badu Island. Now there is a sticker required setting out safe loading.
The rotted out bags of crap that some peopl;e call life jackets - new PFD standard.
    I could go on ....
