Matching Rod & Reel
Hi guys,
I am hitting Moreton on the long weekend - haven't had a surf fishing weekend for about 6mths so Nicole & I are "Super" keen.
For our surf fishing, we have a couple of 12ft rods, and Nicole also has a great 10ft rod - all of them decked with Alvey side casts.
What I'm wondering though is this. I have a few Penn 6000 size reels - usually have them on shorter boat spin sticks (6ft). Is this 6000 reel big enough to place on the surf rods so I can have a go spinning in the surf with some metal slugs?
I would have thought it better to use an egg beater rather than a side cast for retreiving slugs?
Any thoughts?
Thanks - Christian

Re: Matching Rod & Reel
Hi Mate,
I'm not familiar with the Penn, but a 6000 size reel should be ok if it's about the same size as "standard".
What I'd watch though is if you're using it on low-mount Alvey rods - I've never tried this, but it might feel a bit out of balance.
Good luck,
Mike

Christian mike is right it will feel out of balance if the rod is set up for a alvey reel
if you can pick a nnew 12 footer it would let have to set ups cheers

mate I have a 11 foot and a 13.6 foot surf rod with alvey reels, (amongst 5 others but these are my favs) one for whiting one for tailor, I often throw on a egg beater for something different and it is not that unbalanced. It is fine to put up with. Go for it.

Re: Matching Rod & Reel
Thanks Guys,
one of the 12ft is actually not set right back - sort of in the middle, so it can be used for either. Hoping the reel will be big enough - should be. Just looking for the extra speed for retrieving slugs in the surf.
Thanks Christian
