More sharks than usual off Ballina

Hi all,

we fished off Ballina last Sunday, still plenty of pearlies around, although we didn't find many. Actually our boat had a pretty crap day, but you get that.

Early in the day we saw a VERY large shark on the surface (I though it was a small whale at first), not your average fish, maybe in the 20 foot class. It broke the surface about 40 feet off the side of the boat & then sounded so we could see it hovering under the boat, that was it for me, we left for a new spot.

New spot about 4 miles away,

another shark about 8-9 feet comes swimming past & comes over for a look,

maybe we are just unlucky...........
we were bitten off a couple of times as well.

Last drop of the day, I finally got the hook-up that I was waiting for, the way the rod tip was bouncing, I called good snapper, about half way up, it had just gone to HEAPS of weight, I was hoping BIG pearly at this point,...... bloody shark.

Thought we had just had a bad day with them, then others had either caught sharks or had trouble with them.

It could be that now we have no pro shark fisherman working off Ballina any more that this will be more the norm,

anyone else had any problems lately????

Not problem for me muzz or maybe thats just because I havnt had time to go bl##@y fishing!

Hi Muzz,
I've been getting out amoungst the pearlies nearly every day the past few weeks and although I have spotted plenty of sharks (much more than usual) in on the close grounds we havent had a problem with them out wide.
Apparently there have been heaps along the beach at Tyagra just north of Byron.

Wasn't that unusual to see a couple on the surface, although the big one took us by surprise,
but there were plenty on the bottom as well.
We were on pine-on-pine, but the blokes who went north also had problems with them.
Interesting that they are in close up your end, bit like the mackerel, the N/S current hits the Cape & goes out to the 32s+ for us.

Hey Muzz

Tried to pry some intel from you last Sunday, did you get the TXT I sent you?

I ended up sticking in close on the Monday for a bag of trag and some squire. No bities in close to be seen at least.

Missed my chance so far this week but I am on the burst for Friday morning and got it in my head to punch north. Still looking sloppy out wide until the SW drops out what do you have to say on the matter?

I went wide a week ago and hunted all over 42's and Pine on Pine for no result worth printing, luckily I found an old pin holding massive pearlies on my way in, a fluke but I will take it anyway I can. It was my first wide trip since spring and unfortunately I was on my pat so I had to leave them while they were chewing big time.

Hi Muzz, went fishing out from Rainbow Beach a couple weeks back, caught some pearlies, sweetlip, munched up red emperor and cod. Lost countless fish to sharks before defeat, the only fish that made it to the boat after the sharks moved in were three nice cobia, for some reason they didn't get hit. Next time i will move straight away to a different location, have lost a few fish to sharks before, but this is the worst i've experienced them, every fish hit within seconds of being hooked. At least i got a good feed, hate losing quality fish to sharks though.

Hey Glenn,

anything that happens on/after a day at sea seems to get lost, I get a bit brain-dead.
P.O.P. was crap, but if you were in the wrong spot north it wasn't much better from mate's reports.

definitely a good idea to move once they find you, 'cos they wont leave until you do.

Sea tiger, sharks generally leave cobes alone. Its not the rule as ive seen and heard of plenty of solid cobes getting hit by sharks but in general sharks try to chop off snapper, tuna, and the like.
