    macleay w/e

Went to macleay this weekend, saturday, a couple of hours before high tide. This week I wanted to try some new things, I bought some 3" powerbait plastics that had lots of "arms" of plastic for lots of movement, and I wanted to try some gulps on light weighted worm hooks. The powerbait scored the first fish, but we had to wait an hour or so for it, a 44cm squire, then as the tide reached the top i tried the gulps on the worm hooks, no luck there though. Not long after the tide had turned, chris hooked up a heavy fish, it didn't fight much and for a moment we thought it was going to be one of those big toadfish, but then we got a glimpse of a big lizard! Solidly pinned through the nose, chris kept tension on the line and let it decide when it was going in the net, after a few circles the fish goes in the net, but when I swing the net into the boat, she gives one big kick, makes contact with the boat and leaps out of the net and back into the water !! BUT HANG ON... its still hooked!!! Another circle or two then back into the net and safely into the boat. PHEW!!

69.5cms 1.8kgs, chris kept it. For the rest of the afternoon we caught more squire, keeping another three over the 40cm mark, and throwing back just as many under 40cm.

Today we were on the water at first light and we fished until maybe 4pm, a very quiet day, only a few fish, keeping only one 50cm squire caught by chris. Our mate daz joined us around high tide and caught himself a couple of 40cm squire and kept one. It was one of those days when the time between fish can be measured in hours. Sllloooooww.

Cheers for the replies guys. We probably would have put the big girl back, but we so rarely get a flathead there, usually we get the fringe eyed flathead instead. Darryl, we usually fish around the NE corner of the island.

Good going there Simon, Maclay is somewhere I don't fish but maybe I should - it's nice and close.

    Well done
