Quality in the Passage. Thursday am
On Tuesday morning I fished the Southport Seaway with my poppers looking for Tailor or Trevs but got nothing so by about 8.00 am I slipped the waders on and wandered around the Broadwater sandbanks. I picked up 5 flathead but only one keeper at 44 cm.
So on Thursday I decided to head back to the Passage. I started at White Patch just before dawn fishing the drop off. As the sun came up the mosquitoes swarmed in and they were the only thing biting. At about 6.30 am the calm was punctuated by the drag spinning and after a couple of runs I had a 38cm Squire. Ten minutes later I got a slightly smaller just legal one. Both where caught using the GULP Turtleworm in Pumpkinseed on a 1/6th 1/0 jighead.
The tide forced me off the ledge about ½ hour later and I moved to the island side of the bridge, where the council seems to have finally finished the rock wall. After a couple of casts into the murky water around the new rock wall I was onto a decent Flathead – 60 cm – made a good splash but I dragged him safely up the rocks. A couple of casts later I got his younger brother – but he was too small to keep. Both went for the GULP Minnow Grub in Watermelon.
I crossed the bridge to the spot where I got the Jack on Sunday hoping for a repeat and I waded along and around the sandbanks down near Sandstone Point for about an hour. Just as I turned back I thought I had snagged a tyre but then it started moving. It was a another big Flathead that then decided to emulate a Marlin, leaping clear out of the water. He circled for a while peeling off line every time I got him (or probably her) up close to the surface so I decided to tow it back up to the beach. I measured it at 66cm on the brag mat. The 3” Powerbait Minnow in Pumpkinseed did the damage.
I had enough fish for a couple of good meals so I called it quits – a great morning

They certainly did not beat the 35 cm mark by much. When you fish off the bank you rarely get them so as long as there a millimetre over they go in the pan. I can't afford them at $30 a kilo .

Nice catch musketeer. You certainly put in the effort landbased, seaway one day, pumicestone the next. Good stuff.
