Spinning for tailor

Hi i am thinking of chasing a few tailor off the beach like everyone will be soon by tossing out the odd slug instead of just tossing piles. So what is the go off the beach would you put braid on a spinning reel if so what size or mono opinions would be great help

Yep braid mate.15lb is heaps heavy enough.Another tip is to use single hooks instead of trebbles because as you probably know tailor jump and thrash around and the singles bite alot better.Heaps of fun on a light surf rod and mid sized spinning reel.Good luck to ya.Ben

I agree - braid is a must on the beach - especially for lures. Agree also with the single hook on slugs - but any ideas on which to use?

I let the size of the slug dictate the size of the hook, so a 20g halco twisty will have a much smaller hook than the 80 g raider, I just put a hook on and ask myself "is that a reasonable "tail" for that profile?"
Have started experimenting with the mustard red hooks, but it's hard to get a real comparison as I dont have a "control" lure in the same water at the same time.
Do a search on posts / strands about tailor, and search posts by slider. Lots of good stuff.

I have a 9ft spin rod matched with a high speed 6000 size reel.
I loaded it up with 14lb fireline and it is an awesome spinning combo.
I also use this for spinning off the rocks.
The rod is a custom built pacific composite PPG spin...rated up to 6kg.
It throws 40gram slugs an absolute mile and I have changed the hooks on my 40gram raiders to single hooks.
The hook rate so far has been great and since I changed to single hooks I havent pulled hooks at all like I was with trebles.

There have been some good threads on Tailor spinning so do a search on the site. Some great stuff from Slider and others

I use a FSU4120G, TSS4 and 14lb Fireline but may go back to 15lb mono this year.

I have the same outfit for heavier spinning Neil.
4120 and a TSS4.....I used that for kings etc down south.....Great outfit.
How did you find the TSS4 laid the braid on....????
I ended upo putting an extra spacer under the spool and it laid it a bit more evenly...???

I use the same rig for beach/rock fishing.
I have a couple of TSS 4s.The older model lays the line on well but the newer one is a bit uneven.May look at putting anotherspacer under the spool and see how it goes.

I use a Daiwa Emcast 6000(?) loaded with braid off the beach and rocks, but i have been a bit more brutal with the line class. Currently have about 500m of 30lb on. Matched up to my Live Fibre 13'6'' 15kg champ trophy, it is a beast of a thing to hang onto all day, but throws the bigger slugs and poppers i have been using 100m+. May sound like overkill, but the reel will double for offshore plastics work, and besides that, there are some horse tailor where i go and you just wouldn't have a chance of lifting them outta the water with 14lb and a 4 wrap rod. 5 weeks ago i hooked and played (well i bullied him really) a nice little cobe of 7 or 8kg to a gutter my feet, only to have him dissapear in white water as i was washing him out. Got a few on Phill's Slugs too!!
