I asked a similiar question some months ago ... I'm still far from it but making progress. Take heed of what has already been said, there is some very good advice.
It's seems to me the KISS rule applies (Keep It Simple Stupid). Rod, Reel, Line, Little or no lead.
Everything else is personal preference ie. long as possible trace (flurocarbon) or no trace, bait or plastics, single hook or gang, burley or not, etc.
Experienced fishers, correct me if I need to be, as I said I'm still learning.
On Jeremy's advise I use Big Red Mustad single and on Webby's 3/0s. Thanks for the advise guys.
I fish around Peel at the moment and it seems to me the Pan size snapper are on the 6m drop-offs and on the 10m drop-offs you'll feed a tribe on one fish (i will get one of those one day).
Night is best, but being a new boatie on the Bay I'm still not yet courages enough to go out at night. I've still got a lot to learn about the tides and the moon phases.
    Happy fishing.
    Cheers

TAILORTAKER, my mate dezzer (check his posts) fishes out of a 12 foot quintrex at scarby reef and his pb snapper at the moment is around 80cm I think. Only fishes with plastics these days in the shallow water. Scarby reef is a good spot if your patient and only a couple of minutes from the ramp.
