best Snapper rig is line and hook, done, and then next best is the addition of a minimal amount of lead if needed, best baits, fresh tuna or pilchards (plus a dozen other favorites)

I forgot to add, this is for anchored fishing, not drifting!

Mate if I were you I'd get off shore to the first reef i could. Murphy's is usually decent for them but i go off Mooloolaba........ i use a 1 or 2 hook pattenosta(is that how to spell it???) with the sinker about 75 cm from the bottom hook. just Helps you from getting snagged on the reef with the swell going up and down. Yep pillies tuna or squid will do the job if theyre there. I like to think of em as the bream of the reef they'll eat nearly anything just fight harder.

If your bait is on the bottom your not going to catch a snapper in the bay, as nolem has said a hook and line is about it plus as little lead as possible to keep your bait in youe burley trail but not enough to put the bait on the bottom as all you will then catch is vermin. Also keep eveything light , the lighter the line and leader you use the more chance you'll have of hooking a good fish. One more tip is to be very very quiet in shallower water, no bashing and dropping things in the boat and anchor quietly

Ps dont burley to much in summer as sharks can be a real pain at this time.

PPS. If you really want to catch a good bay snapper, forget bait all together and start using plastics!!!! All the best snapper caught in the bay fall to the placcy brigade , dont they Webby

not enough information to give a proper answer to this question. Even then, there are a few successful ways to catch snapper.
    1. what water depth
    2. 'offshore' or in the bay
    3. do you want to catch a few pan size reds or the biggest snapper you can

    Re: best snapper rig?

Tailer tacker , on slack water try using the longest trace you can manage, say 10 to 15 ft, a 9 o hook and a full slab of fresh mullet fillet, its a pain in th bum when your sinker hits the rod tip and the fish is still 15 foot away but it gets results ....there still a lot of OS snapper in the bay ...also there not always on the reef its self ....they love sandcrab aswell
