Daily rod and reel maintenance??
I'm new to all this, yet still want to take care of my gear, no matter how cheap it is.
Anyway, I've been told numerous ways to clean the rods and reels after use, everything from warm water to WD-40 type products.
I've been using water and detergent in a spray bottle, but a salesman just told a friend of mine never to get detergent near the reel, so now I want to ask the best way to deal with all this.....
What about hooks as well, is there a way to safetly stop them rusting once wet, other than to stop buying the cheap sh!t?
Despite the fact the most all my gear is relatively cheap stuff, I could have bought tonnes of fish from the market for what I've spent on it! So, yeah, I'd like to keep it all working for as long as possible.
Thanks!

Re: Daily rod and reel maintenance??
wash with warm water only and let dry. detergent and spray lubricant(usually contains white spirit or thinners) degrease your grease and oil and the moving parts end up running dry plus quicken rust or corrosion. reels should be serviced every 12 months. If done yourself use minimal reel grease and use a quality reel oil.

Re: Daily rod and reel maintenance??
Jump in the shower with it, make sure you remove any terminal tackle before you do though, couple of bumps with the butt onto the bath mat when ya get out to get rid of excess water, now leave in the sun for a while to dry off. yep do this with my game outfits when away from home. When at home I just give them a spray with a mist with the hose (no water restrictions) and the same as above. Make sure your drags are tight untill dry then back them off.

Re: Daily rod and reel maintenance??
forgot tackle,
I keep all used tackle away from unused, used tackle gets a spray with lanalin or veg oil of some sort. In saying that I normally have a couple of paternastor rigs hanging off the bait board with fairly rough looking hooks on them and they normally get used first while makeing up a couple of new ones for the day

ps
I have often thought about a few of those silicon drying bags would go alright in the tackle box

Re: Daily rod and reel maintenance??
I don't leave hooks in packets, I get a few of those pill boxes with the dates on them, and have a silicon packet in each one, spools of mono get kept out of full sun light, reels get taen apart once a year and I rub a candle over the male part of a rod joint to stop them sticking

How would a bit of tuna oil go protecting the used hooks?
Dipping/storing them in a coat of tuna oil, if it acts as a rust preventative, could be a good idea?

Re: Daily rod and reel maintenance??
i just rinse reels off let stand to dry
wipe down rods
always keep my used takle away from new stuff normally just rinse off and replace whan a bit crappy
been told never to use lubricant products such as wd or inox as they leave a residue that fish can detect dont know if true or not
doesnt mater how much youve spent on gear getting yourself in a good habit of looking after it only stands you in good stead when you get some top dollar gear
ask some of the guys who go way out have spent on gear makes my jaw drop goto look after your gear
all the best

Re: Daily rod and reel maintenance??
I have had conflicting advice about spraying with WD or lanolins. Seems to be essential on the eggbeaters after each trip. I find the lanolin keeps them ticking over and looking ok. When I have neglected the spray, reels get a bit crusty, even after rinsing in fresh water. Have not noticed fish staying away either-or maybe I would catch more if I stopped spraying?
