    More protected GBR areas?

Just saw on TV how the commercial fishing fleet and tourism groups have reached an agreement where the pro's will not fish certain reefs - 4 or 5 in fact between cairns an townsville I think.

Did not see it all so do not know what it is all about, something sly no doubt, anyone know if this will impact recfishers also?

    cheers fnq

from what I saw they have been talking and making this agreement for over 10 years. the pro's said there areas were to pristine to be wrecked or over fished. It was an agreemnet reached with no government or green intervention just pros and tourism industry. The story isn't on the net yet but probably soon.

    Hi FNQ,

Mate from my understanding the reefs protected by this agreement were on the OUTER GBR, I doubt the rec fisho will be affected too much.

Thanks for the replies, there is so much propaganda and cow poo on the news up here regarding the reef, 99% of all the news repots are utter rubbish, this confused me because of the pro's being implicated by choice, suspect the area must be low impact from them.

    cheers and thanks fnq

If those areas are on the outer reef, the sheer distance will protect them from fisherman and tourists.

Labor have been quiet since 2004 but are bringing back the plan to extend the GBR Marine park to the edge of the economic zone - basically 3 times the size.

The scare tactic game they are playing is saying that the governmnet wants to mine the reef or drill for oil. - completely made up and no facts at all.

In Parliament the suggestions are that this is part of a preference deal with the Greens - in NSW
