My battery is in an awkard place and hard to get to.
My wish is to keep all accessory wires (including those heavy ignition electric start cables) retained on the terminals when boat is not in use - but without draining the battery.
Is this possible - using some form of isolation, etc.?

you can buy just a simpler isloator which just basicly cuts either the positive or negitive main lead which isloates all the batery power or you should really have 2 batteries and a switch that gives postions

Yep, that would be the best way. You can buy terminals that have an isolator on them, but if the battery is in an awkward spot it may not be the best way to go. A remotely mounted dual battery switch would be easy to install, even easier to access and make the fitting of a second battery really simple if you ever decide to go that way. Should only cost you 60 bucks or so with the switch and a couple of new leads to run from the battry to the switch. Cheap peace of mind.
Best brand of isolator to buy - what criteria should I use?

I have one that is rated at 300 amps continueous current bought it on special from whitworths and it seems quite reliable (bargain at $25). Whitworths currently have a switch of similar rating on sale for $50.
