    Bream On Lures

Hey guys just wondering where would be a good place to start targeting bream on lures and sp. Been bass fishing for years but never been to the salty stuff and was wondering if anyone could give me a rough place to start and any tips that would be helpful much appreciated.

Ive caught them along the rocks at redcliffe, around the trawlers in nudgee crk...early in the morn or just on/after sunset they come up on the reef/ rocks to feed in shallow water...soft plastic and hardbodys will work...you will find the bass lures will work just as well on the bream....pink is a good colour...

Mate the best advive I can give is grab some 2" or 3" gulp! grubs in the good old pumpkinseed colour put them on some 1/16 or 1/20th TT jigheads (I prefer these sizes with the grub because any lighter and they don't have much action as they sink). Find some pontoons or docks with or without boats or marinas (the older the structure the better as there will be more growth) and throw the SP's in as close as you can....... By this Imean if you can land casts within INCHES of pontoons or jetty pylons and watch the line as they sink. If it makes it to the bottom give it a few twitches and let it sit again (watching the line for movement).

Different days see them in different moods but as a general rule, SLOW, whatever the kind of movement. You'd be surprised how long you can "dead stick" an SP before a bream will pick it up (I've not moved SP's for 30 seconds before a fish picked it up.

Also a good way to learn is to go to a place where you KNOW there are bream like marinas at dawn an sight fish during the dawn calm. Also keep a sharp ear for bream "slurps", the sound is unmistakeable once you know it. If you do see fish, don't so much try to hit the fish with the SP, but put it near the structure. You'll know you doing alright when you see bream peel off the structure and follow the SP downwards.

The two golden rules for bream on lures are STRUCTURE and STEALTH. If you bring one to the other you should do alright

Took both my rods down to the Tally River breakwall Sat.Morning, wasn't much doing, landed a bream on live yabbies, then thought what the heck, grab the other rod, 1/16 TT jib with a #2 hook, and put on a 2" Gulp Shrimp in the nuclear chicken colour on it, some 30 casts later hooked and landed a Bream. Just legal at 24cm too

Had to perform Patel style surgery on him to get the lure out, swallowed DEEP, must have been dazzled by the SP's weird colour scheme.

A bit of a breakthrough for me on SP's - 5 weeks, first time I actually landed something on an SP.

PS: Speaking of SP's - BCF charge $9.95 for most of them, if you're after REAL VALUE on Gulps (or any fishing gear for that matter), go and check out the Fishing store that's part of Nerang Camping. $8.95 is their price for the gulps BCF charge $9.95 for, plus you're supporting a local family-owned business.

Ended up there 'cause neither of the BCF stores here on the goldie had any nuclear chicken gulps, on account of some bream comp, so I shopped around and ended up at Nerang Camping's tackle store....

    Re: Bream On Lures

I'm using Smith Towadi's as they are a great surface lure as well as the R2Sea bubble pops and having great success on bream as well as whiting on the sand flats. Been using the sinking poppers from EJTodd's (plop & Skip) with good success at dropovers. Get it down to the fish, entice them up over the drop and onto the flats and then they are yours. Its great to get back to hard bodies again instead of using SP all the time.
    Cheers, JAn.
