My line of thinking is if it fits in a pan it's a Squire, if you need a Barby or the Oven it's a Snappa !

My cut off for snapper/squire would be 2kg.
my cut off is south of the border. Only Qld'ers use the term squire. As far as I am concerned they are all snapper, and all taste yum!
in sunny qld the DPI officially adopted snapper as the name of the fish and dropped all reference to squire, certainly wont find squire listed anywhere on official size limit charts. But old habits die hard as when I get a small snapper still have a tendanct to call the squire but wouldn't be bothered correcting any on for using the term as we all know what the fish they are referring to.
snapper are snapper soon as they hatch out of their little eggs, little marlin are still marlin, little whiting are little whiting.
yep, agree with that, it seems that Squire is only a "pooncey" SEQ thing, (much like a VIC Pinky) they are all Snapper and indeed Schnapper has officially been dropped from the Fisheries and dictionaries.
Grant's Guide to Fishes; suggests Squire to the size of 3lb - then Snapper.
I had a look at photos of the Snapper I caught when living in SA. If the bump on the head method ruled, then I have caught a lot of 20 plus pound squire. Though Squire isn't a term used in SA.
that could be so, Grant (of Grant's guide to fishes fame) lives in SEQ so he WOULD call them Squire!
