Break down service
I have been a member of a well known car breakdown service for last eight years,paid extra for cover for caravan , boat trailer & trailer breakdown.Haven't needed them till on the weekend when I broke a leafspring shackle on boat trailer.Rung them up they told me they don't cover anything over 4 metre unbelievable!
So check your policy.
Ovakil, firstly that sucks the proverbial bigtime....
Second, I am considering an on-water breakdown service in the Sunshine Coast area and I suppose an on road component to that might well be worthwhile considering too...
A roadsize u-bolt and fishplate replacement is not difficult nor should it be prohibitively expensive. Gal u-bolts are around $10 each and about $30-40 for a fishplate and your back in business.
Whats the 4mtr reasoning? How did they rationalise that???

Have no idea on both
Lost my cool when they told me I will have to pay for a tow truck.
Luckily I was at Morteon bay boat club with a secure car park,bought new u bolts next day & fitted 1/2 hour,now I'm replacing all of them.
ovakill I guess your talkin about the RA with the CQ mob eh.
what class of cover did you have..??

Where the caravan or trailer requires specialist equipment, as in the case of a broken axle, broken tow bar/linkage, springs or seized/collapsed wheel bearings or where excess distance beyond the free entitlement applies, the additional cost must be borne by the driver.

I have bronze cover
They didn't tell me any entitlements as it was over 4 metre in length.
Did they tell you that over the ph or was it the person who attended the scene?
I dont think they were right as I can only find restrictions on over 4 tonne

It was over the phone,the lady was asking me size of boat,told her 22ft & bit extra for trailer,then she put me through to supervisor,which he told me about 4 meter rule.I'm sure all phone calls are recorded.
Just imagine how many boats/trailers are under 4m... if ya right most of us are completely out in the cold.

Hang on 1 minute and I will get the figures....
Was there maybe some confusion, and they were refering to a maximum length of 4 metres for a tilt tray tow truck for some reason and thought you required an 'all up' tow for some reason?
No idea really, I just cant see any other reason for the 4 metre limit.
87,359 registered vessels under 4mtrs, current to 31/3/07 out of a total number of vessels in the QLD region (including PWC's) of 210,328.

BM have you got there towable trailer length (LOA)as I recon the RA with a CQ guys wouldn;t be able to measure the length properly

the figures I have come from QLD Transport stats department and they are for VESSEL lengths so they wouldn't incorporate the trailer length as well.
They are well set out figures which gives boat ownership by shire and by length of vessel. I am impressed!!!

Yeah I know where ya coming from BM but I cant see the road breakdown boys measuring ya hull length to determine if they can help us or not...

Yes, I agree. That whole situation sounds really strange... If you were towing a b-double yeah I could understand them not wanting to roadside assist with your 3 piece rims but for a boat trailer of any reasonable length it seems very odd....... and worthy of further investigation.
