Got an early 90's Evinrude on the Mustang (thirsty but otherwise good)
Mercury on the tinny, (didn't like them before but been a great motor)
4 horse Johnson on the tender (like an old donkey, won't die)

Will probably trade up to a newer Yamaha for the Mustang.

Only one I didn't like? Wasn't mine, but I got to hate an old Chrysler! Sorry Nicholas but I'm with the majority on this one.

But if you actually go back to that era they were the best engine around.

In fact as a case in point i decided one day to prove the power of a Chrysler. This experiment took place approx 2yrs ago and I had 2 15ft boats.

Boat 1, a runabout of unknown make, quite deep vee and very similar to a Savage Electra (but not one). Powered by a 75hp Chrysler 3 cylinder.

Boat 2, a Mustang 1500 runabout, lighter than boat 1 and much shallower vee than boat 1, powered by an 80hp Merc 4 cylinder.

The test was 1 up, 25ltr portable fuel tank, safety gear only (same in both cases) and nothing else

Boat 1, planed instantly and I mean instantly and reached a top speed of 65kmh (off gps) in just under 2 seconds.

Boat 2, planed more slowly and reached the same top speed in 5 seconds.

Both were correctly propped for their application. In fact both were 17inch pitch.

I took boat 1 away on a skiing holiday and with 2 big blokes in the boat (roughly 200kg) and my 85kg brother out the back, he deep water start slalomed with relative ease. In fresh water (not more bouyant salt water) and with a 75hp engine. Try that with the Merc on the Mustang... No hope..

But hey, its horses for courses. All brands have good and bad points (some worse than others particularly with the unpublicised problems) and its really up to which engine suits which person.

The Chrysler Marine Corp was a division of the main Chrysler Corporation.

As part of a US government bailout Chrysler Corp was forced to sell off all its "neo nate" business interests, of which Chrysler Marine was one. Chrysler Marine was among the last of their "neo nates" to be sold off as they were trying to retain it from what I am told. This occured in 1984 (or thereabouts).

For anyone interested www.chryslercrew.com is a very informative site linked to Chrysler Marine Corp and the boats they produced along with the engines they produced. Look for the racing 135hp donks with direct manifold trumpet exhaust.... Fabulous stuff!!

By the way, I had an email from Jim Hubbard (same surname as me but we aren't related) the VP at Fon Du Lac, Wisconsin (Merc HQ) in response to an email of mine to him, and one line that forever remains in my mind was "theres a lot to be said about the technology of those old Chryslers".......... This from very high up the Merc tree of important people...........

Hard starting tip for Chryslers and funnily enough Yammies........

If choke butterflies are not fully closed they will be a prick to start. (Choke plate models of course)

Unfortunately there have not been enough guys around the country who knew the ins and outs of the Chrysler outboards and the brand suffered somewhat.

My first motor was a 1963 evinrude- cost near nothing... good little motor
Second motor Yammy 20hp 2 stroke had it for 4 years put hundreds of hours on it and had no probs, just the usual stuff like impellers, services etc. Very happy with it.
Third motor.. Yammy 40hp 3 cylinder 2 stroke... Bought it new in 2003 had it since, it is great, plenty of torque, rips the 4.2 blue fin out of the hole, runs smooth and quiet, and i am yet to have a problem with it. A good mate of mine is an outboard mechanic and he says the yammies are about the best outboards around, he says they are easy to work on, easy to tune, very reliable and run smooth, the only bad thing he has to say is the alloy they use is not as high a grade as some other brands and therefore they corrode quicker.

Yep... corrosion and blockages of their fine carby ports are a big issue for Yams

My mate also told me wash it properly, flush it properly and use MACS additive, use corrosion guard regularly and should be fine...........4 years on and no corrosion

i got a 150 johnson 1998. its a bit heavy on fuel but other than that its a bloody good engine

Have owned Johnson, Mariners, Yamahas, and several Mercurys, more so V6's. Now have a 225 Optimax and do not have a complaint, especialy when I pull up at the bowser!! Merc 4 me.

Have a 90 hp Evinrude E-tec. Fantastic motor. Great power & fuel economy. Had a 70 hp Yammy 2 stroke before this & it to was a good motor, but chewed more fuel than the 90 E-tec. Also like the Tohatsu TLDI & Mercury Optimax motors. Not much of a 4 stroke fan unless they are on boats bigger than 20 foot.

I currently have 60 merc 2002 model, would like to trade up to the TLDI 90 Tohatsu. Have spoken to a Merc mechanic friend of mine and he states they are bullet proof. Anyone tested or have the new TLDI 90.
