Checking RPM on a small outboard

    G'day

I'm doing a few trial and error mofications to get the best performance from my little 9.9 merc. It's a 2000 model 2 banger.

How do I set up a tacho or something that will tell me the engine revs at WOT to aid in propellor selection?

Re: Checking RPM on a small outboard

there is a few different types of mechanical type tachos that will give you a good indication of revs (not as good as a "proper" one) not too sure where you can buy one from though.

Tacho connects to the stator output (yellow wires from under the flywheel)

Yeah an induction type tacho is your best bet like the one mentioned above, some engines fire twice on the same piston stroke which can be a pain with one of these but I would guess your little engine wouldn't. They connect to the first sparkplug wire you find.

I did a search on ebay and could not find christies.

Can anyone advise me on where to buy or borrow a suitable tacho?

I fitted one called a tiny tac...The wire was just curled around one of the plug leads and it was battery powered...about 50 bucks if memory is correct...worked a treat...cheers Mick

Re: Checking RPM on a small outboard

Here is the tiny tach, they are good, can buy from the US also on these, I coudln't find the christies one on ebay this time around and I have misplaced my favourite to their business website, from memory they were the right price.
