    South East QLD JEW'S

Hi all the jack season was a ripper this year for us and wanted to continue to fish the winter for jew, but as a hot months person I normally lay the boat up and do the essentials like bearings etc , but I have been hearing of blokes getting jews in the Maroochy river and have been thinking of doing a few trips.

The problem i am having is i know nothing whats the season, are they winter? I read a article saying they where summer but it dosn't sound right. and what sort of rig? Bait ?

ok any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Regards TT

when do the mullet run - big jew are caught on the beaches of coolum, mujimba, yaroomba and marcoola in winter and at a guess in the rivers.

Get some live mullet find the deep holes in the rivers or fish the pressure eddie on the up-tide side on pylons on neap tides.

disclaimer: I've never fished the sunny coast for jew but the theory's gotta be the same. Its not like jacks you got a lot of waiting, right bait, right place, right time AND lots more time and time and time ...

    Hope this helps

Winter it is and mullet are the go - not those little silvery eyed ones though. Black Bream (Luderick) are also very good bait but confess that I have never caught Jew on them because those bastard bull sharks get them in about five minutes. Squid are also very good but must be fresh and not treated with sodium metabisulphite. Need lots of it though because of relentless attack by bream.

Chris is correct. Time and more time is the key to success. Night after night without giving in to tiredness or weather.

    They are worth it though.

For me, it begins on Thursday. Even though it is early in the season a three week stay on the boat should see at least one landed.

I too plan on getting into the jewies on the coast this year as I have never targeted them up on the coast. My cousin fishes the clarence and has an unbeleiveable strike rate. He told me his biggest rules are - Deep water close to pilons is always a chance. Live mullet or Herring go well. If your tieing off to a pilon always be as silent as possible and banging (and that goes for Jew Period) and they'll bugger off real quick. If you have a light shining on the water on the down tide side of a pilon thats where to fish. Never ever drive your boat through the light. Ive fished with him a few times and nearly every time he hooks up and I miss out. After the first hook up you have to be patient for a second as they spook easily or move to another pilon a good distance away.

    Cheers Chris
