Re: Sleeping on boats offshore overnight.. whats the trick?

It has been a while since I last did an all nighter but I remember as mentioned above it's much more enjoyable on someone else's boat where the responibility is more theirs than mine, I then sleep much better. Today I think I would prefer an island, mossies and all.

    cheers fnq

Here is couple things I do before going to sleep on the boat
I use the GPS by Setting the Anchor alarm to about 200 metres of drift of the spot anchored on (I allowed for tide changes so doesn't go off) I had mates up north have drift very far in one night and woken where the hell are they

I have my anchor light up high so can be seen from all directions and throws light over the whole boat

I anchor up in water where the slient death ( the bigger ships) can't travel or stay out of the shipping lane areas giving them a big wide berth

Set alarm clock(as used to get up to work with for me its my mobile phone) for the time to get up in the morning so not worry about the time too get up

Anchor close by to another boat /group of boats or if couple of boats tie two off toghter

With the water slapping on the boat hull try anchor boat out of swell direction or hide behind an island (is in order and the bilge pumps are working too
should have no trouble getting a good nights sleep on the boat

Ps Take your favorite pillow/pillows and bedding make feel more comfortable
In life, start off wrong and you'll finish wrong. Put just one skeleton in the closet and you'll have to put another one in to hide the first, and so it goes.
But start off right and you'll finish right. There's no comeback when you stick to the truth - and no skeletons!

You guys are keen. I wouldn't like the idea of nodding off with the possiblilty of cargo ships etc in the area

My overnighters are usually tucked in behind a reef or uninhabited island. No trouble sleeping. Set the anchor alarm on the GPS & also have to set an alarm to wake me up a couple of times during the night to check all is well.

If you are doing an overnight fishing trip...why sleep?

What's the trick? It si to stay away from BIG boats, they are fast, they are silent and they will generally never see you.

Look at the trawlers that have been hit/sunk in the past few years and these guys were awake!
