    Sure its in South America?

Looks more like a European 'Wels' catfish to me. In Spain they catch then up to a couple of hundred pounds. - Jim

It has always been my private conviction that any man who pits his intelligence against a fish and loses has it coming.

Ok, Tip # 1. Don't go anywhere near the mekong river looking to catch one. They have never been caught on rod and reel (Or line for that matter) in the river.

All of the ones you see caught are impoundment catfish.

Tip # 2. Do google searches and find a frenchman who does guided fishing in Thailand. There is a big lake within 40 minutes drive of down town Bangkok where the big Mekong catfish are caught.

AnglingThailand.com Frenchies name is Jean-Francois. Name of the impoundment is "Bung Sarm Rahn".

Tip # 3. The impoundment has a board walk around the edge where you fish from (And drink p!ss). The fish are normally hooked just under the boardwalk, and then they run to the other side of the impoundment.

Tip # 4. The fish pull like freight trains. Best caught on a 2 speed TLD 30, with a game fishing gimbal belt and a shoulder harness. The Frenchman will supply the gear.

Tip # 5. be prepared for a long day. The fish are hard to hook as the big ones are all aware of the baits being used to catch all the other impoundment fish. The big ones are very wise and seem to know how to avoid hooks. Also, be prepared for several hours on the rod getting it back in. Then the fish will go under the boardwalk, and you will have to jump in the water and pass the rod around a pylon to get the fish back out again. Expect to be sore for a week afterwards.

The frenchman guide (J-F) is your best bet to get you hooked up. Lots of other guides about, but he is by far the best. However, don't expect to score a large fish hookup from a one day session. Might take many many days till you score the big hookup, (if you are lucky enough).

    Enjoy

Lots of Barra fish farms over here. They will let you pay to fish in the fish farms. Fish farms are great fun because the fish don't know anything about hooks and lures - never seen them before. Throw a lure in and it gets smashed every cast.

    Cheers
