Begginer asking for advice on Reel selection
I am a keen fisherman, and new to Queensland. I have a 15 ft boat that makes it to Mud Isle in nice weather. But I am so ignorant of Moerton bay fishing technique's . I see the seagulls working sometimes & cruise up to see quality fish in a feeding frenzy. Big fish, I have flogged the area with silver/chrome lures. I have even started casting plastics at them. I have drifted pilchards over them. It is so frustrating to be beside good fish. Sorry I drifted of the subject, last weekend I got my first hit, drifting a live bait off a float with 1.5 m leader. The problem was it didn't hook up. What ever hit, hit at the speed of a freight train, pulled 6 meters off the old alvey I was using in 2 seconds. And as I spent the next 30 minutes untangling the over run.I pondered Alvey has a legeondary reputation. But I don't think I can control one. My experience tossing a celta up a Tasmania creek to catch small trout, doesn't apply to selecting reels. Side cast reels run to $700 any body know of a cheaper alternative ?

Re: Begginer asking for advice on Reel selection
hi toolman you are looking at one of moreton bays several different variety of pelagic species which visit at certain times of the year. longtail tuna, mack tuna, bonito or if your lucky, spotty mackeral, sometimes all three can be in the same school. as for reel selection, go for a shimano tss4, available at a mart all sports for around $129, match it with a 8 to 9 foot rod with a bit of guts in it, buy raider 20gram, laser 15 to 35gram or knight lures, dont use any wire!!! position your boat up from the direction that they are travelling. stop, wait for them to bust the surface, cast, crank like hell, and then hang on!!! ye ha, this time of year is great

G'day
What you'd be looking at for this kind of action is a shimano Tss4, or Baitrunner 6500. All dependant on the style of fishing you are doing.
the Tss4 is a high speed spinning reel and a good choice for those tuna, mackeral that are out there at the moment.
I will be out there sunday with my BTR6500 and 8' lie fibre rod chasing tuna.....
Have fun with your selection of gear and get ready for a very fast learning curve.
