It's a bit embarrassing really. Launched at Clontarf about 5.30 and ran out to the reefs off Scott's Point. Anchored up and was getting my gear and berley bucket organised. Didn't have any bait thawed so I put a couple of packs into a bucket of water. What I did have were a dozen or so cooked banana prawns which at some stage were going to be part breakfast and part berley. So that I would have a bait in the water I put one of the prawns on the first rod rigged and tossed it out. I was half way through rigging the second rod when the first one doubles over and the drag screams as something takes off like an express train. I grab the rod and ease off the drag a bit because this fish is not stopping. I had no idea what it was, but at least it kept out of the reefs and I was finally able to get some line back. It swung out a bit wide and came up near the surface and I thought "Oh no! - not another bloody catfish." Finally I worked it back to the boat and to my surprise I was able to slide the landing net under 64cm of lovely squire.
"You beaut" I thinks "I'm in for a good session today!" Needless to say the cooked prawns were off the breakfast menu. I fished on for about 5 hours, changing position a couple of times, but I only managed 3 bream and a monstrous green toad that would have gone at least 5kg.
Now I have a problem - do I eat the prawns or keep them as bait (after cooking them)?
